Well she is a Tanky DPS. Watching SK Wickd with her is just silly. Guy won't die no matter who he lanes against. Same can be said I believe with therainman's build. Built for early sutain and farm and then comes to a head mid game. Finishing with style late game.

The reason I like it is because of the early sustainability. Irelia is pretty weak 1-5 and pretty much 1-5 you are just trying to stay alive. I feel the 5 health pots are necessary, especially against strong laners.

Triforce is core ofc.
I also experimented with adding atmog's to it, and thought it was reasonably good.
Irelia isn't a champ I play often, so I'm never quite sure what to build. XD
EDIT: I usually start with Boots + 3 health pots. A regrowth pendant straight into philo is nice too.

Triforce+Hybrid DPS/Tank items=You can't kill me lololololol....Or that's the experience I've had with her.
Mercs+Triforce+Wits End+Atma's+Sunfire+FoN=Godlike status
Granted it's situational but ranked comps typically roll with AP Tanker/ AD Off Tank/ AD Carry/ AP Nuke/ Support (as we all know)
So the build pairs offense with defense and lets you take damage while dealing good portions of it back...Something like that.

Essentially, for Irelia, all you REALLY need for offense is Triforce and maybe Wit's End and you can build full bulk and roflstomp the enemy team. An early regrowth into Philo lets me dominate most lane opponents with ease. I've NEVER had trouble against a Vladimir even past level 9 as Irelia. That's how I build her ever match!
