I do believe it's a matter of 'expanding'. They can have a money, but it takes some time to set up. Also, they mentioned inside of this post that they were expanding and were adding more servers. It comes down to patience now.
You can't expect them, in this reality, to be like one day "Yup, FIX SERVER TIME" then suddenly, fix server. As long as it's free, I'm not complaining. Now if this were WoW or Starcraft 2.....

I don't understand how it can possibly take them this long to expand their servers, though. I mean, yea I appreciate what they do because it's all free, but when they're releasing a bunch of champions and skins and whatnot, don't you figure they could put those resources into actually letting us play the game?

Look at EU, it just got servers x2.
And since that the servers are running very good and fluent.

I've no idea what you're talking about really. Servers aren't down frequent enough to where it becomes a problem for the casual player. When they're down for me, it's usually just on patch days, but that is to be expected I suppose, seeing how they're literally opening a floodgate when the servers go back up from patching.
