I always loved sona most of supports since she was more... active with short CDs and all =) So I agree with you =)

the way supports played before was kinda stupid, and extremely boring if you were one. It came down to just sitting back spamming heal whenever it was off CD. Besides that all you did was ward, you couldn't really do anything else. I really hope the meta changes now, because it was getting old.
Same with sona, and I never played supports that way. oh the grief I got, but Oh how many good games I did when my carry realised I didn't just heal I set up kills as well.
Edit: yeah, I'm a sona fanboy. Haven't tried her after remake now, since I play mostly US to get my summoner there to 30.

Yep,

The only place her heal is extremely reliable is in ARAM, it's like a pit stop ^^.
Of course not, her heal is a extreme team protection weapon. Throws enemies away so they'll lose a kill and heal the ally back to battle. Her heal is really really great.

I was dying to buy a hero called "Rhapsody", she's a support (yeah, the man whose main is morde, the name is HELLruler likes to play as support) and
looks like Sona. And I played a custom game to see if shes really what I expected (you can play with any hero in the practice game, so its a free test). One thing that really called my attention was that the builds I checked, the range of skills, the items, they were making you part of the battle. You dont just stay behind and heal. You go with your team, use your skills, help with buffs, heals and some damage.
Bringing things to LoL: the supports were almost idle during fights. They just had to stay where they were and heal/buff the allies. With those changes, they'll have to go with the team, be part of the battle.
EDIT: I dont think Rhapsody and Sona are alike anymore. Here's the proof: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0P4H0V8bx_E
