I don't think this is a viable question. I don't believe in the "best champions of the game".
Different champions have counters to other champions. Different team setups work better together than others. Picking a certain champion might be better depending on who the other team picks than they normally would be. How you play a champion also makes a difference.
Lots of factors make a difference in this game.
But yea, Amumu is a straight boss. Cho'gath is epic as well, and under-rated imo. Ashe is great. I haven't played Orianna really but from what I know about her she is good. Many champions are very good.. Teemo's shrooms and knowing where and when to pick a team fight can change the tides of a match. A decent DoT and a slow which can stop escaping enemies, chasing enemies and make the difference to take out their whole team along with a blind AD carry? Not too mention a stockpile of mini wards all over the map. Yet a lot of people don't think he's that great. Sure, he falls off a bit late-game, but what he can bring to a team is still great.
What matters is how you play a champion, team composition, and enemy team composition.
EDIT: I want to reiterate how I feel about Cho'Gath. An AoE knockup with a 3 second slow. A 3 second AoE silence. An 800+ true damage ult. An ability that makes your attacks do an additional 200+ magic damage. And you can still build him tanky as **** while still hitting insanely hard. He can fill the true role of a tank, dishing out enough damage and CC to get focused while your carries pick off everyone one by one.

Master yi sucks... He's a meh jungler with no cc and he's a worse version of GP. The only thing I think is really good about him is that he's a good backdooring champ.
CANNOT GANK without red buff. That is a BIG problem. In other words, his ganks are pretty much non-existent.
Well, you can't compare
Master Yi and
Gangplank. Master Yi has an Ultimate which differentiates him from most enemies. He is extremly fast and get's nearly all his dmg for nothing. And that's why tanky builds work really well on him.
Maybe
Master Yi has no strong ganks without red buff, but with red buff, his ganks are nearly godlike, because of
Alpha Strike. Also, if he ganks a lane with a cc-bot, it results pretty much everytime into a kill.

Maybe

Only if the CC is slow. There's still stuns, snares, fears, knockbacks and knockups :P
Anyway, I think two best characters in game right now are Orianna, who has great AP ratios on her low CD skills. She also has a lot of utility (Q for vision, W for movement/slow, E for shield/damage, R for messing up everyone lol) and she is able to zone out really well in lane with just Q/W. Give her blue buff and she'll poke you to death.
The other one is Udyr. He has a lot of options, from Tanky DPS to tank to hardcore AD. He can lane and jungle, and he's good at both. His bear stance is like a stun mode that also gives movement speed, and can potentially stun the whole enemy team in a teamfight. His Turtle is great for sustaining, and his Q/R do a lot of damage. His passive encourages you to spam his low CD skills, which cost almost no mana mid-late game. He can take damage and still kill others basically.

gonna quote this into my cho'gath guide :3
Amumu - Satisfies both jungle and tank. Can gank well. Game changing ultimate.
Karthus - Huge AoE damage output, can help kill Dragon and Baron incredibly quickly. Past 6 has global presence to force caution on the enemy bot and top lanes. Big AoE slow that also debuffs armor/mr. Death Defied punishes you for focusing him, but you'll be punished worse if you don't. Farms like a boss in mid thanks to passive mana regen on Defile and a big range farming/harassing skill in Lay Waste.
