What are the differences between top, mid, and bottom? Is one lane better for certain champs, or better for solo/duo?

Mid is solo because it's hardest to gank, and 2v3 is better odds than 2v1

Top is usually solo because of dragon control bottom, 3 people doing dragon is faster than 2 doing dragon. That's the only reason for top being the solo lane, really - but it's a BIG one, that gold adds up.

In the current meta game:

Top lane is the solo lane when there is a jungler. It is where strong solo champs like Nasus, Garen, Jax, Akali, etc. go to farm. If the lane is 1v1 (junglers on both teams) it's pretty much a farm-fest, if 2v1, the solo usually has to hold back at their tower and hope they don't get completely zoned out while waiting for the jungler to gank.

Mid Lane is also a solo lane. It is where Carries will usually go due to their dependence on Levels/Farm. You'll usually see AP carries here since they are dependent on both levels and farm as opposed to AD carries who really just need farm.

Bot Lane is the duo lane. You'll usually see support and AD carry here, where the support does not get any farm at all and gives it all to the AD carry. So you have 3 champs with the equivalence of solo lane farm, and 3 champs with the equivalence of solo lane exp (the jungler should be leveling as fast as the solo laners if he is playing right). Bot lane is duo because it also gives better dragon control (although I feel blue team has an advantage in this way)

@xenasis, I disagree on mid being hardest to gank, a jungler can come from either side, meaning you'd have to ward BOTH bushes to be completely safe, unless you have a really strong escape mechanism like Vladimir or LeBlanc

That's the reason that mid is solo - anyway.

Junglers can come from two sides mid (only one real place that's effective on either side though - which is very easy to avoid if you've warded the river, too), top they can come from three places. Sneaking into the brush, normal way, or the tri-brush.

sneaking into the brush? i assume you mean the top-most brush, not really sure how likely that is considering your teammate would have to have pushed the enemy really far for you to sneak that far without being seen at all, plus you'd then have to wait for the enemy to push back far enough for you to gank, which is a waste of your time since you're trying to gank a lane that's pretty much secure anyways.

And tri bush is only a valid ganking spot if the enemy is literally attacking the turret or overextending past the turret for a kill, which, again, is rare in comparison to the likelihood of getting ganked from either top or bottom bush at mid

Sneaking into the brush is a high elo tactic that was displayed at both Dreamhack and the Intel Extreme Masters, it sounds bad, but honestly, it works so well the pros do it.

Edit:
Oh, and yes, you push the lane, when the push it out again they don't expect a gank.

The bush ganks are the most effective ones because noone ever expects them.
And pushing the top lane is the best thing you can do when you are dominating your enemy or are playing someone who can escape ganks easily, because your opponent loses farm at the tower and the lane resets pretty quick because of the tower.

To make it simple:

Top - either solo with a tanky champion or two champions (most common is solo)
Mid - solo, generally the AP champion
Bot - support and AD champ

Keep in mind that these situations can change.
