Caitlyn can win against virtually any champion 1v1 in lane.

It's just more effective currently to go bottom and have a support or tank protect you while you farm because carries rely on farm while casters grow stronger with levels and really spike around 6~11.

So the meta makes it more natural to have AP carries as solo, and ad+support bottom.

Not to mention the fact that supports don't need farm, since their CC (and stuff) still works without farm.
