This is a great point. I should have mentioned that I play quite an assortment of champions. Currently I have at least 2 champions for the roles: Tank, AP carry, AD carry, offtank / jungle. My plan is to specialize in one type of character, however, the good of the team will come first ;-)

Try to get good at everything then have a ' good to ' class.

Out of curiosity. Where does poppy fit in all of this? I have really enjoyed playing her, but she doesn't seem to be a champion that can scale into a high elo level of play. Why is this?

Because she doesn't fit the meta well.
As ppl have said; she doesn't fit top, mid and jungle.
The only place poppy can go is bot lane with a support. Which I've seen work in some high level matches.
But poppy is a very niche champion. She's overpowered, but niche. Her power is very apparent in dominion where she doesn't have any problems with not fitting in.

Well seeing as you have some time to go before you get into high-ranked play, always keep in mind that the current meta may not be the meta when you get where you want to be. Another reason why it is good to learn different roles. Don't think I can add anything else to this thread.

This is a great point. I think the biggest things I have taken away from your guys' great responses is as follows.

A) Melee Ad are good in jungle / solo top. It is very important to learn to jungle with the applicable characters 1st.

B) I will make sure to be able to effectively play a variety of roles with 1 "go to" role being my bread and butter. In this case, the go to role being melee ad top / jungle.

Thanks again for the great advice. Its extremely refreshing to come to a forum where good advice is given in a non-condescending or combative way.

Props to the Mobafire community!

I feel this is the same for just about every champion that doesn't fit in. Dominion seems to be the perfect place for role-less champions to shine. Dr. Mundo, Katarina, Poppy, Akali, Singed, Evelynn.. Many underused champions find their place in Dominion.

Special thanks to Keondre for the sig!

Due to inactivity, I am no longer reviewing guides. Sorry guys :(

Katarina fits the meta in normal 5v5. And so does Akali, Singed and Mundo, but Mundo is just underpowered right now.

With the steady downfall of supports, tanks and tanky-dps are starting to shine a bit in bottom as babysitters. ( Rammus is especially good from what I've seen. That armordillo can get a carry so fed thanks to his 3 seconds taunt.)

Man up. Play Pantheon!! Kick them down a well! >:)
(oh, I mean, help your carry kick them down a well)

As for serious melee picks, currently Talon, Nocturne, Lee Sin, Jax, and Nasus are very good.
Riven's still too new, I don't really think judging her is a good idea.

Don't pick Poppy unless you are already fairly high elo - if you want to climb Elo. She wrecks enemies - IF you can get your items - and that's the main problem, since most games are decided earlier/during the laning phase.

(Sidenote, I love playing Poppy, but she simply isn't a strong pick if you focus on getting to high Elo)

- With Lee Sin you can currently never go wrong, he is all around strong
- I have yet to see an outstanding Riven
- Pantheon is strong, but I have no idea about counters/what he counters

Another addition I have yet to see: Jarvan. I play him a more OT/DPS style, which seems to best fit his kit, but you could go more damage if you wanted. I usually jungle with him too, as his ganks can be quite powerful. He isn't SUPER fast at it, but he can gank as early as level 2 and needs no help by himself. I have found him to be quite strong at counter jungling too, provided you ward enough to know EXACTLY where the enemy is. I have yet to see a really strong Jungle Jarv guide though, so good luck. I am working on one, but it is behind 2 other projects first so....
Strength may win the fight, but style wins the crowd.

+rep if you like what I say, explain why if you don't.

I completely disagree.

Riven is as strong as Renekton in solo top from what I've seen. If not stronger. Maybe you just haven't seen many good Rivens (tbh, neither have I). The best I've seen so far has been about wRAth's calibur (including him).

She may be able to jungle, but she's definitely NOT one of the best junglers in the game. Not by a long shot. Her ganks are extremely easy to avoid, especially if you have a ward up. As I understand it, her jungle time isn't anything special either when compared to others like Noct, Lee and Udyr.

Riven's not as strong as Renekton, since they both have no ranged abilities, but Renekton has a heal to keep him in lane, Riven, however, does not, and they have similar damages.

I'm unsure if you've ever seen a jungle Riven playing properly, but I can tell you from experience, her invasions and ganks are insanely good. Her ganks at level 2 are matched by only Lee Sin and Xin Zhao, and her early game jungle dominance is crazy. She's not THAT fast, but she's not that much slower than Nocturne, and honestly, if you're just judging junglers on speed then you are overlooking way too many aspects.

Riven is by far one of the best junglers in the game right now. She's about Xin Zhao's level, if you ask me.
