I'm in agreement with Wintermond. Brand has pretty high AP ratios, and his numerous skillshots make him a really fun to play. I would wait a couple months before looking into Xerath.

Special thanks to Keondre for the sig!
Due to inactivity, I am no longer reviewing guides. Sorry guys :(
Brand is the best AP carry in the game, after all.

Xerath is strong, could use a slight buff, but Brand has the whole "fire fire everywhere" thing going on. And as we all know fire beats arcane lasers 5/10 times....WAIT A MINUTE!!!!!!
In all seriousness Brand takes competence to play. But his damage is so incredibly high that IMO it makes up for possible mistakes you can make. Get your ulti off in a teamfight and die, NP you still did a majority of the enemy teams health....(Thankfully due to the bug fix...)
Xerath has some nice damage too. But you need to do about twice the work to utilize it. As I said, his damage is nice, but it's not as amazing as other AP carries. Xerath's strength is in his power of positioning. Finding yourself at a good range to rain Hell down on enemies from afar. He's a strong poke champ with Locus of Power and his "Q". The issue is Mage Chains is your shortest range spell even in Locus of Power. The range is short enough to actually ruin your positioning and damage focus in a team fight (damage focus= Champ you wanna kill). If you cant land Mage Chains on your target a majority of your utility just got thrown out the window. Overall give it ~1 month and we may see Xerath as the new main mid laner. His range and early game damage combined with a strong kit make him a contender against FoTM Brand/Morganna. (Or so I've experienced)

No by best I mean best :P
Damage wins games.
I'd say Grag is probably #2 and Karth and Ryze tie for #3 in my book.
