Well... Say you start out with
Doran's Ring, a rush a Deathcap immediately after, you will get [(140+15)x130/100], giving 201.5 AP (and yes, i did run that through my head). It looks like a lot, but I'm not so sure about that, rushing a Deathcap doesn't give any additional stats, and thats a bit risky, personally I get my Deathcap as my second major item, after
Rod of Ages or
Morello's Evil Tome and boots

Jungle Mao? What the @$#@^? Check it out here
Depends on how you're doing. If I get 1,6k quick I just rush Rabadon's while if I'm doing mediocre, I buy small things like boots and doran's ring for easier laning phase.

If you are over-farmed, with most AP carries, rushing Deathcap is definitely power.
If you aren't overfarmed, items with a bit more utility come into mind. Also, a lot of AP carries will be nerfing themselves by doing this. Consider this:
You rush Deathcap where you may have gone ROA or something like it. Now you do a lot more damage, but have to recall because your OOM every 2 minutes. I think sustain is really important early-mid game for an AP carry - being able to stay in lane and farm as much as possible is what I like.
If you start getting outplayed once you've rushed the deathcap, it could be a seriously bad situation. Getting pushed back and denied will be your worst enemy, and they'll be all over you knowing you have no sustain.
If I'm doing well, on my usual AP carry
Swain I prefer to rush will of ancients before deathcap (yes, sometimes I throw ROA out completely). Just an example of how sustain will keep you in the game longer, versus deathcap winning deathmatch only.

2-3x dorans rings + rabadon's is pretty standard in high elo for most AP's.

Rabadons as a first item seems like only a good choice if ur dominating in your game. To get that much gold would require several kills early game. to me its too expensive if your having a normal gae u would be better off building a RoA with doran rings and boots.

Only if you already have a few Doran's Rings (regen, durability) and flat AP runes or some item like RoA; otherwise, straight-up AP isn't going to win your lane/fight.

AP Carries in a teamfight just burst down and AoE the enemy team. It is better to have more damage in the earlier teamfights where people haven't built much defenses yet. You are supposed to just do your combo and go away until cooldowns recharge, so if people try to get to you, your tanks should stop them easily.
Going with so much AP early on also helps farming. For instance, Brand's Pillar of Flame beging to one-shot caster minions if you get Deathcap as first item. Xerath's Q as well.
What do you think?
