It does indeed take 27 minutes to pay off. You forget, however, the immediate stats it gives (albeit small). If you get this at 8 minutes or so (not uncommon), it will pay off by ~35m.

Since early game is the big time for supports to get kills or assists that give them a LOT of gold, getting that early to sustain throughout the game will be a good idea. Having 800g that you have to spend now isn't as good as a sustained 800g+ (which you'd naturally slowly burn through anyway), a bit of health, and the opportunity to upgrade.

I'd say a HoG shouldn't be built on a non-support unless they're upgrading it though. It's nowhere near as good as its old armour form.

Yeah but if i sell it then i lose the health it gives you. And i usually don't like buying items just to sell, them back. I find it useless unless your buying its recipe items. I just stick with the Ruby Crystal

well if your intent was to buy it to generate money then you would plan to sell it back later anyway.

hog is mostly the second choice anyway, as everyone benefits from having increased health (unless you dont use mana, then hog is first choice.)

Only jungle and support can really afford to buy a GP10 just for the gold and sell back later.

Top lane can -sometimes- get away with a philo stone.

Gold per 5 items are often used for sustain or to gain an early advantage. Don't you dare grab it it if you are going to sell it back. That's just a terrible idea. Gold per 5's are mainly grabbed early to give the lane advantage and the extra gold regeneration helps you out to make up for the gold spent since you are USING IT TO MAKE A HIGHER VERSION OF IT. Whenever you build GP/5, you should never ever look at it as a source of income but simply as a minor refund for a future item and a minor lane advantage.

Small list on who gets what if anyone is not familiar with GP'5.

Philosopher's Stone = Sustain item Philo -> Shurelya most of the time. Supports always get it, top laners sometimes get it but can easily be punished

Heart of Gold = Early item that gives more lane control. HoG -> Solari or Randuin. Supports usually get this too since Solari and Shurelya is a pretty nasty combo. Again, top laners/junglers get this more often than Philo since they end up building a Randuins in the end but this is situational.

Avarice Blade = early item to give more crit to whatever runes you are using. Champions that will eventually create a Youmuu's often grab this but it's pretty weak early on.

Kage's Lucky Pick = generally picked up by AP's to give them a small edge in the lane but have complete intentions of making a DFG in the very near future.

Philo stone actually can be the reason certain champions like GP can win a lane.

3x Doran's blade / philo stone on GP for example can be very strong in select match ups.

I saw somewhere, I think on another forum, that the Heart of Gold takes 27 minutes to pay itself off. And seeing how you start with about 475 gold, and games are about 30 minutes long, it almost usually will never pay itself off. And if it does than you wont be getting much profit out of it. Although the 250 health is good there are other items you can buy that give about the same amount and cost less. Does anyone else think that we can do without the Heart of Gold?

It combines into 2 other items, so if you want those, why not sit on this for a while for free gold? Every drop of gold is free since you were going to spend that anyway. The items that are actually weak is the Lucky Pick, because it doesn't combine into anything later. You'll get your gold back... but that's it. So there was no point in getting that one in the first place.

You HAVE to sell it back later because you need the space. So what you said basically translates into "Don't buy it at all."
