One of the best resources I've read^

^ great guide though i would have to disagree with a few of the synergy combos.

IMO taric takes the cake with poke synergy. Taric/ashe Taric/vayne can get out of hand very fast.

I'm also sad to see no mention of zilean, who i believe to be the most underrated support champ.

From a Support player:
I also agree with 3 basic support classes with gray area:

Sustain:
Soraka
Sona
Taric
Alistar
Janna

Kill Zone:
Blitzcrank
Alistar

Aggressive Zone Zone (lol):
Maokai
Zilean
Lulu
Alistar
Kayle

Which kind of lane you run is based purely on your team comp and personal preference. Personally i love playing support Maokai, but am learning to play better Tairc, Alistar, and Blitzcrank. A bot lane with blitz, where the ad has a good gap closer (corki valkrie, vayne dash, ezreal acrane shift) and the jungler has a hard CC (noct fear, WW ult, Udyr stun passive, et cetera) is nearly impossible to lane against. Maokai/Zilean have good range and great damage on the ranged zoning abilities, and Mao has a great kit for CC, and maybe requires a little less skill to play to max potential than Zil, but both are fantastic for out-of-the-box supporting. Alistar zones just by BEING somewhere, and is the best at using head games with people.
As previously stated, all of these have requirements.

To run a Sustain lane, your jungler will probably be more focused top, but his presence will be mostly required to get good kills. Should have a hard CC. Your AD carry should probably be above average and have great CS scores to make sure you can win lane.

To run a Kill Lane, you really REALLY need to be in vocal communication with your AD carry so you can time your CC/zip in and kill perfectly. This lane does not need jungle help, if run correctly, it gets kills all by itself; altho it helps alot, and is great to make bot lane enemy team rage hardcore and mess with their heads Your jungle does not really need hard CC, the kill lane support generally has enough himself to ensure kills.

Running a harass zone lane, Jungle support is almost required. Hard CC is not totally required, but is def appreciated in the jungler. Long range harassment basically keeps the enemy team just a bit below full health, which makes them generally unwilling to engage in a full on fight. The major difficulty with this lane is pushing too hard. Since the enemy team is being forced away from their creeps and is thereby missing CS, your ad is going to push the lane. Keeping the enemy on their tower is going to pressure them hard, and they WILL call for jungle assist, so having ALOT of ward help is essential to keeping yourself from getting jungle ganked. In order to get kills so the support can get some cash, the support actually needs to ease up a bit eventually so that the lane can get pushed back to HIS tower. Then the jungle can come in with his CC, and a big fight will ensue, and if timed right, can net 2 or possibly even 3 kills, which means 3 assists for the support.

Hope this helps!

Wouldn't really call Taric a sustain support, he is more "kill zone" than sustain imo.
His heal is kinda bad, and you shouldn't prioritize the heal when you gain levels, W is the way to go.

Only reason i did not put him in KillZone catagory is that he only has 1 form of CC. his heal may bot be great, but it IS there, and it heals himself and the target on the same spell. I will say, however, that of all the "sustain" characters, he is def the most aggressive (aside from alistar)

even thought he only has 1 form of cc, its an incredible cc. Also i would say his mana issues early game keep him from being a "sustain"

Taric also does probably the highest burst damage of any support.

A good taric should have no mana issues whatsoever due to his passive. All he has to do is hit full health creeps a few times and there it goes back up. Yes its a good CC, but still. I dont like that the enemy characters can move as it is traveling to them, and it seems slower than say mao Twisted Advance. The move during travel time can be the difference between a successful jungle gank and one that gets all 3 of you killed. Other champs like Blitz and Alistar are much more potent. and

@luther3000:
I think Mao surpasses him in the burst. With a full combo (toss the sapling, TA before the sapling lands, sapling hits, auto attack+sheen proc, sapling explodes, Arcane Smash, auto attack+sheen proc) i have taken HUGE chunks out of enemy player life on a very consistant basis. taric is good, but not AS good.

Maokai's Saplings are great for area denial. And his burst damage hurts a lot. I've been on the wrong end of that.

But I haven't seen Maokai since forever. In fact, the last time I saw him was over half a year ago...this might be because I'm a casual player and only been playing a few times a week and am only Level 18.

What supports are popular in higher leveled games? Ranked, or not, whatever. :) Just wondering.
