Urgot can pretty much work wherever if you know what to do with him. That is only in laning phase though. What are you going to do without that tanky DPS on your team? If you want Urgot top then run someone like trundle in the jungle so you can have a strong late game. I still prefer him either bot or mid. Don't listen to what people tell you either, he is just as viable mid as cait (and in most cases will rape a cait in mid in my experiences).

Well you pretty much build brutalizer, hexdrinker and frozen heart in laning phase. Urgot is a beast mid game with decent farm.
He also has that shield. So...

Urgot is a great toplaner due to harass, he does well against most tops who have no reliable gap closer (and even decent with others that do). The safe harass is just too annoying.
As for the typical "Zomg everyone counters Nasus", it's all fun and games until someone loses an arm.

So much melee up top just says, "bring a badass harassing champion up here and eat my face off" just like taking AP mid says, "please destroy me with Kassadin or Galio."
