I'd run it top lane (until the new patch items). In the new patch he'd be a viable mid with malady and lich bane since malady currently does 10%of your ap as magic damage, and lich bane was change to magic.

THIS ONLY APPLIES TO THE PBE PATCH
Just got done playing AP Xin on the PBE - 4 games worth. It's... borderline broken. 100-0 squishies in around 3-5 auto attacks (3 of which are his Q) after you have berz greaves, malady, lichbane, and rabadon's and can tank turrets (mowed down 2 turrets and an inhibitor simply by walking up to them and cycling Q and W while my team fended off the enemy team from our nexus).
I used the same build that's in the video posted above vs baron. I had a full page of attack speed runes and specced into 21/9/0 for AP making sure to take the 5% of ap on auto attacks mastery.

It COULD work, but the problem is that you're far more item dependant and before you got the basic stuff you need, you lost the game already.
I can see how you get massive selfheal with this, but before you go AP it would be more efficient waiting for S3 to try out some on-hit/tanky build with some extra AP on the side.

You can do various other builds, a tankier build would go Berzerker Greaves, RoA, Nashors Tooth, Spirit Visage, Frozen Heart (especially if they have a vayne), Situational item here. The cool thing about this build is that it centers around sustainability first (AP,cooldown reduction, attack speed) and then you can decide if you want damage or tankiness (or bit of both).
The example I had in the above post was a balls to the wall offensive heal build since I needed to anticarry an enemy Eve that was destroying our team (and the outsustain and full on attack speed necessary to do so for the knockups), and then be able to sufficiently split push after the fight by taking towers. To make it clear again, this was in fact an "on hit" build due to malady and my passive dealing a total of 15% of my AP as damage every attack on top of the initial lich bane burst on the first Q. It's just interesting how this allowed Xin to be an assassin since the burst from E>AA>Q>(almost instant 3 hits for the knockup) was sufficient. You can try it in the live server with less damage available to you, but the sustain is the same, and so is the tankiness.

I'd say no. Xin gives a lot more utility to his team by being a tanky initiator than an AP caster. If you want to do lots of damage through scaling with AP, I think you should just play someone who specifically scales with that statistic.
I feel like you didn't even read the thread. You can still build tanky with him, the ap enables him to survive longer to perform his role in a team fight since his W heal scales with ap now at a .7 ratio which is huge. The goal with this build isn't damage but sustainability and maximizing disruption. This comes with the bonus of being able to tank just about anything as long as you can auto attack.
