You shouldn't buy runes now.Listen to what your friend told you.Although there are three junglers, that I can think of, with who you can start jungling.
Warwick-He has some very nice sustain through his passive, so you won't get slaughtered by the jungle creeps.
Fiddlesticks-I've never really liked him, he's kinda slow but his Bountiful Harvest is an insane spell.
Nunu & Willump-He has something like a second Smite with his Consume,oh and it also heals you.

Cho'Gath and Malphite can also jungle pretty well without runes. I think Amumu can pull it off if he gets a decent leash. Might want to pick someone safer to start with though.You'll probably want 12 defense for tank junglers, though some offense is nice if you're jungling someone like
Lee Sin.Get 9x
Greater Seal of Armor when you hit level 20, it'll help a lot.

Everyone has given you good advice. Warwick and Nunu & Willump are your best bets for jungling pre-20. Although you will probably get alot of flack for it since most people pre lvl 25 dont jungle. So your top is going to go 1v2 alot. However don't let this dissuade you, once you start playing serious games at lvl 30 an experienced jungler is going to be received quite well on any team. Season 3 the jungle is going to get alot tougher, so get used to the mechanics and get your senses on good ganking opportunities before then.

yes, he's right. go save for runes. buy runes before lots of champions.
btw, go try jungling vs AI. that's what i did when im starting to jungle. it is to be familiar with the system and not an embarrassment in case you die vs creeps. i remembered that my friend told me that jungle Shyvana is a beast. i tried it vs AI(without runes) and i failed miserably. lol
it may take alot of practice but jungling imo is very fun to play. once you mastered jungling, go for counter jungling. :D

Go with one of the ones mentioned above, and no, runes are not NECESSARY but they are recommended for a reason.
Yes you are definitely fine without runes, but trust me once you have unlocked tier 3 runes, they help you out a ton! It really depends on what you get but usually always, they have a huge impact.

Take for example if you have yourself some Attack Speed Quints. that extra 11% attack speed may not seem like a lot, but it's actually a great boost for you believe it or not. Same goes with flat armor seals, they provide you with 13 armor if you have 9 of those which is recommended.
These help you take reduced damage from the jungle camps, considering Season 3 Jungle are harder.
