Should authors of XXX champion be allowed to vote on guides for XXX champion?

I have been accused of downvoting people's guides before, just because I have a guide on the same champion. Lugi, for example (and what I did was actually downvote it, take a screen of the percentage drop, and upvote it, take a screen, vote count stayed the same).

Why not make this impossible?

If I have a Nasus guide, I shouldn't be able to vote on another Nasus guide.

Personally I think this would solve about 70% of the troubles MobaFire has about "revenge downvoting" or "omg, new xxx guide, gottah downvote it so my own xxx guide stays at the top".

Whilst I may be knowledgeable about Nasus, and would thus want to share my imput to other guide writers and say, "That build is not very viable, -1", it can never be seen as constructive or anything good, only as, "jhoi has a Nasus guide, she's downvoting because she wants her Nasus guide to be #1."

So.

Yes or no?

Would you rather that authors would not be able to vote on champions guides they had written guides for themselves?

This would mean:

Wrath couldn't vote on a Kat guide.
Astrolia couldn't vote on a Sona guide.
Psi couldn't vote on a Veigar guide.
Nick couldn't vote on a Zed guide.
Mowen couldn't vote on a Kog guide.
I wouldn't be able to vote on a Nasus guide.
etc etc etc for all the champion guides each author has written.

Yes/No?

If yes, if no, please contribute to the discussion your own thoughts and ideas.

Verified Gold Elo players/vets/people with special privileges or sth should be able to vote on the same champion guide, in the case that this goes through.

Reason being is most of them won't actually do the negative things you mention, and when I do see the Vets actually commenting on guides they leave useful feedback.

Plus, I've never seen a vet troll vote :o

Vets and high elo users are only human too. Everyone would have to have the same restrictions.

I can see where this could be a good idea.

I don't think it should be implemented as a general policy, however...let's give everyone the BotD here. The threat of being unable to vote of guides for any champion you have a guide for may very well be enough for most users.

It would be an effective way to deal with users who have obviously just downvoted all the guides for a single champion (that they have a guide for) or who have been willing to leave obvious revenge downvotes, if needed. The problem arises that this is likely to cause more cheating the system, however, because all you have to do is go off to somewhere with a public network (like a coffee shop or the public library) and make a new account (with no guides for that champion ofc) to downvote with.

EDIT: how would this function in relation to archived guides? 'cause I have...a lot of those....8D

I agree with it. Alot of people get competitive with the guide above them and want "The number 1" spot. Oftentimes authors also will have it set in their mind that their build is much better than others unless alot of good evidence is presented to prove them wrong.

We discussed this in the past, it seems like a good idea on paper but there are a couple issues with it.

1) People will just create a second account with no guides and vote anyways. We could start checking for guides written by other users from the same IP address but it's going to get confusing, and then if you use a public IP, that various others have used, your account will seemingly become "infected" and you will not be able to vote on all kinds of things.

2) It could discourage guide making and/or voting. If I make a guide for my favorite champion, the champion that I spend the most time playing and know the most about, I am no longer permitted to express my opinion on other guides for that champion? That cuts out a lot of useful voter information. So either we have a decrease in votes, or a decrease in guides, or both.

Also what would we do with your past votes? If you create a guide for your favorite champ, do we retroactively delete all your past votes? If you don't realize this until after you'll be pretty pissed. If we warn you with a message "by creating this guide all your votes will be deleted for this champion", you're gonna think twice about creating a guide.

I don't think it's a workable solution :(

What about a warning like, "It seems you have written a guide on the same champion. Do you still wish to cast your vote?"

Any sort of system that can discourage malicious votes is what I'm looking for. I don't like seeing votes like, "FAIL" posted by a newly joined member with their own Gangplank guide. It's as if MobaFire allows 9 year olds to come online and vote without conscious.

It's the age old problem. Democratic voting means you're gonna get some irresponsible voters. It's just made more frustrating by the fact that you can see them voting via C2V. It happens on every website. At least the playing field is level here, everyone is in the same boat, and different guides float and sink. I feel your frustration though - people trivializing and even bashing something you created, invested in and care about.

If there was a magic bullet solution to make sure no one was voting purely out of anti-competitive spirit, I would go for it. Even just a solution that is guaranteed to do more good than harm. I don't think this is it though. I could pop up a message, but it's not going to deter anyone that is voting in the way you state, they will just ignore it.

Our in-depth IP restrictions do prevent the worst abuses, though. You may get trolled, but they are prevented from doing any serious damage, or truly unbalancing things.

I think the method of rating the guides should be changed. I don't know exactly how these guides are rated, but I believe that the percentages are generally lower than they should be.

For example (im not getting personal, but using this as an example) I had a guide that had 9 up votes and 2 down votes. The rating I had was 69%, but I had 9/11 people who upvoted me. I just don't feel that this was a good representation of what people thought of my guide. (Side: the two down votes were created by users who hadn't signed on in months and came on just to down vote me. They haven't logged back on since, so I'm assuming troll vote)

To counter troll votes I think Mobafire should do 2 things to its rating system:
1) Make the ratings on the guides percentages based on total up votes over total votes cast.
2) Require a minimum of 5 votes to all new guides before a rating is given.

This will do two things:
1) It will disallow new guides entering the site to be rated at 100% based on 1 vote.
2) It will mitigate the effectiveness of troll voting.

However, the main problem with this is someone could get a friend to down vote a guide before it is rated, and the guide can have a rating of 60% upon reaching 5 votes if 2 troll votes are cast. With this said, I think it would be best to have a 10 vote minimum on new guides, but that just wouldn't be viable due to the fact that new guides don't really get that much attention, let alone votes.

This is a tough one :\
