CS'ing "well"?

I suck at CS'ing. I don't deny this.

But what is CS'ing well? Is it when you have a certain number? or is it just being at a higher number then the enemy?

Is it not possible to be relevant to your team with out the "average" CS to your team?

I've been trying to CS better and I feel like in order to do so, I have to completely disregard my own team and just farm. I have to zone into it, or I suck at it.

Take this game for example:

I feel like I did well. I was at 160 CS by 20 minutes, and I am told that's 20 below the "best case scenario" laning phase.

I also merc'd Lux and Vayne with Taric's help in between CS.

My problem is later though, I was pretty much ignoring my team to get more CS like "a carry should be doing; farming".

Is this a counterproductive way of doing it? Or do most teams prolong the carries ability to keep farming safely for late game?
I'm rambling.

I just wanna know when it's a good time to go try-hard farming and when it isn't. And if some people could give me some tips for CS'ing without getting all tunnel vision about it, that'd be great.

Well, I always aim for 100 at 12 minutes, and I haven't expanded the goal past them.

Farming late game, you just have to be aware of when something is about to happen. If you farm when nothing it about to happen, then you are fine. But if you farm when the enemy team is gearing up to take dragon, a turret, or baron you are in trouble. In the same way, if you farm when your team is trying to gear up for an objective, that is also bad.

The really pro players can get 200 cs at 20 and 300 at 30. Since I'm not a pro player and cs isn't really my strong point I tend to make my goals 100 cs at 15 and 200 cs at 30. I feel like that's a pretty realistic goal for most players to aim for every game and I usually feel disappointed with myself if I don't get it. On the other hand one could argue that as long as you're ahead of your opponent you're doing just fine.

Later in the game there's a balancing act between knowing when it's ok to freeze and farm the lane for a while and when your team needs you.

imo...:

laning phase should be long to favor adc's. Should be short so apc can keep enemy team shut.

you shoud only afk farm afer laning if you are behind. unless there is no risk for yu and your team while you afk farm, ie, they don't need your damage.

Just for me, I always try to grab 70-80 CS every 10 or so minutes. If I have more than that, then it's great. But when I don't, then I'll usually try to get more CS during down times or get some kills/assists to compensate for that.

CS'ing "well" for me, is when I have more CS than my lane opponent. That, or if I have more CS than most of the people in the game, like I'm the third or second most farmed without much difference between the higher ones. I dunno, as long as I'm ahead of my opponent then I'm fine not reaching the standard for CS'ing.
Many thanks to Xiao, jhoijhoi, TinyStar, Tsuki, and WOMBO for the sigs!

cs comes down to a lot of factors in all honesty. don't focus on the number, focus on getting every single last hit when you are in lane. make sure you hear the "cha-ching" for every creep. that's all that's important, really. as you get better at the game you are going to learn when to farm and when to be with the team, when to roam and when to be in your lane, when to farm your wraith camps, etc.. all these variables are going to effect your cs. if you focus solely on last hitting the number is going to increase automatically, if you focus on the number you may be adversely effecting your team because you are trying to have the most cs in the game.

as far as mechanics go you should just work on them one step at a time. work on last hitting, then worry about map awareness, etc.. trying to do too many things at once will probably result in you improving very slowly. soon this stuff will become automatic.

Thanks to Xiaowiriamu for the sig!

CSing is about doing it on the side while not neglecting the other stuff you have to worry about.

You concentrate on CSing and therefore get poked out of lane? Bad.

I find that mid to late game, I tend to go clear lanes and kill jungle camps along the way and this keeps me at a decent average, while I can still come fight for my team, If you're doing well enough that you can handle their team at your current CS and you're denying them more than you are getting, I'd stick to the team rather than afk farm, I was playing with a few friends while I was solo top and they constantly had more gold despite myself having the highest CS. they were getting champion kills to even it out.

Thanks for the advice, EvilDice.

I've been taking it steps at a time, like in the game I posted, despite being zoned into CS'ing, I was still aware of when I could harass the enemy carry, or when Taric was going into to attack and to follow him up.

I'm glad I'm not literally tunnel vision about it.
