How to get better at map awareness

Hi, new to mobafire, i have used this as a resource since day one though. I was wondering how to increase my map awareness while playing. It always seems like a simple "look at the map" would do, but I get so caught up in farming or taking down a turret that I often miss easy kills or let teammates die when I could have easily saved them.

Does anyone have any tips as to how to increase this awareness, or will it just come with time?

play Soraka or Shen, their ults require you to constantly look on the mini map.
I've also learnt from using Clairvoyance in S2, currently it's not so viable sadly.

I believe it comes with time, honestly.

Although playing support and jungle are what improved my map awarness, so you could do that and see how it goes.

it comes with time, most games i can tell where people are going to go even when the map isnt warded just because ive played so much

but playing support or jungle or anyone with a global ult (soraka pantheon shen gangplank ziggs twisted fate) can help

if youre playing adc mid or top i normally look at the map after ever 2 or 3 creeps and i made it a habit and its saved me a lot so looking at the mini map after every cs can help a lot with map awareness if you cant jungle or support yet

i found that in the options, you can link a number of your number pad with the action "see number X teammate" if you want to see easily what's going on on other lane, you can use this option (never tried still)

also what i try to do to improve myself, is to write on a paper what i didn't do last matches (i never use ignite because i always forget) and when you start a game read the paper and try to focus on this point

Play with someone watching you or in a call in-game. Have them compensate for your lack of map awareness with their own.

Other than telling you to try making a conscious effort to glance at the map every free chance you get (it takes less than a second), there's very little I can say to help your map awareness. Glance at the map whenever pings go up.

Playing a more passive support will free up your attention to map awareness, but even if I tell you and you get caught up in what's happening in your lane, then anything I say beforehand will be pointless.

Get someone to play with you and poke you every time you have poor map awareness.

First, thank you for all of your suggestions. I really appreciate the help.

Champs that i own with a global are soroka and tf. I know improving my ganking would be a huge deal with tf and really help with map awareness under stress. So i should play some more of him?

I am pre 20 so jungling isnt the best option, i do own warwick but its hard when the other team has two top laners since no one else jungles pre 20.

I will see if i can find someone to poke me when i am doing terribly. If anyone is volunteering let me know.

Going to look into the number pad thing.

Any other suggestions would still be apreciated. Aa far as getting champs i am still about 5k away from my first rune set when i hit 20. So it may take a while for me to get expensive champs.

Actually, there are already keys set to check on your teammates. F2 through F5 will snap to your teammates and F1 will jump back to you. Of course, your camera has to not be locked on you initially.

When you get around to jungling, take a second between camps to F2-5 and it'll help you map awareness overall.

Lastly, look at the map a lot. That might just be common knowledge, but saying it helps.

The best suggestion for beginners is to get in a habit of looking at the mini map after every minion kill in your lane.

Not sureif I get the playing global champs suggestion. I suppose it forces you to look at the mini-map, but if you're bad at that currently then they're basically telling you to play a champ that you're going to do really poorly with.

So, after playing five games with tf and losing each of them... I decided that is not the best plan to increase map awareness.

I have recently been forcing myself to look after every 3 minion kills (normally more often early game). This has helped a lot. Its a fairly simple solution but just giving a specific timing to look makes it a lot easier to get in the habit. I still miss easy kills and saves, but I have been doing that less and less frequently.

So, in response to Oneidas, yeah you are right. Playing a champ with global did not help much.
