Looking at the first tier offense masteries, I had to start wondering. Why are people going 3/3 in the AP mastery on AP champs? Yeah, ok, AP helps you and all. But that .6 x 18 equates to about 10 AP at level 18, which isn't really even noticeable damage. I think it's very worth it to trade that for 2% crit, which is very noticeable when you do start critting, especially in the early game, when a random crit can grant you a huge amount of harass.

In short, I think that 2% crit > 10 AP even if you're playing a straight caster. Thoughts?

As a caster, you probably shouldn't be autoattacking much, if at all, during the laning phase. That 2% chance might encourage you to try to aggressively harass, resulting in more damage taken from minions and their own harass, while still being unreliable. That 10 AP, on the other hand, will always be there at level 18, no matter what.

I think it's pretty clear that crit is a bad choice on casters. They simply don't have much benefit in auto attacking.. If you don't wanna focus on your spells you shouldn't play a caster. Also worth considering is that those 2% gives exactly +2% average damage without any CrD modifiers. Crit is unreliable, especially for casters..

You see here, in the early game, a lot of spell casters ARE attacking a lot. I don't see why you say they aren't. The mana isn't sustainable to just spam spells with no attacks unless you take clarity. Along with that, you're last hitting a lot. Sure, late game, you won't be auto attacking unless you're lux. (And I really think building this way is the best way to go with her) But it does help in the early game. And 10 AP is really not much extra damage in any way. =/ I guess what it comes down to - is I notice when I take crit. And I don't notice when I take AP.

The only time a spellcaster should be attacking early game is to last hit, and you won't need crit for that. Your damage is primarily spell-based early game.
