How they function is what I'm most curious about and I'm curious about your thoughts since you know biochemistry.
I already "know" where they come from. It has been hinted at and foreshadowed in the manga. There's only one logical conclusion, and that is... not spoiling :)
Try to find it for yourself.
The reasoning for... um... it.. has also been foreshadowed, so good luck finding that too :)

gotten through the sixth episode of anime...guess I will have to read manga to continue story. pretty intense...lot of stuff in the air. good foreshadowing and story telling. I like it though I have to admit it is a little extreme even for me who enjoyed that so many characters were wiped out in the anime I enjoy. will let you know when I get farther and can make some conclusions..but to much in the air right now and not knowing their origin and source of sustenance makes it difficult to draw up any theories. I can say that the one telling thing they have said is that they release enormous amounts of heat...but given their size this isn't all that surprising...takes a lot of chemical breakdown to run machinery that big...again meaning that their source of energy is still a mystery as humans alone couldn't provide it....good find though all around. +rep

Yo ! I've finished watching the Kara no Kyoukai movies + epilogue.

Overall impression: Sweet ! Kara no Kyoukai was good. Almost great, more than decent, simply sweet and good to watch. It was worth my time for sure.

The strenghts: The art/animation FX was the best aspect of these movies. It reminded me of Fate/Stay Night S1's animation. Not only it was nostalgic but it was simply beautiful, delightful to watch.

The plots in each movie were okay, not bad. The background story that puts these movies together was a bit weak but nevertheless it had the job done and made sure the movies were connected.

The weaknesses: Nothing major/serious but the main protagonists's background isnt really clear through the movies. You can't know how was their life and how will it turn out...I don't know how to express this but all I can say is that it's because of an incomplete adaptation of the novels.

Anyway, I definitely recommend it. Next I'll be watching OreShura because I have exams and I cant start a great anime fearing that I won't be able to focus on the studies :P

DAT ART...Look at how the water splash is drawn !

Isn't the ending for Kara no Kyoukai bad?
I haven't watched it but people say it is.

What people are you talking about lol.

Besides Kara no Kyoukai didn't really end, there's a movie coming in Oct 2013 talking about the events happening after 10 years from the main story.

Even if all the movies were connected, every movie had it's own ending and not an ending to the main story.

Movie 5 is the best, the worst one was movie 6. It was just a filler.

Finished Oreshura. If it wasn't for some funny scenes, I'd have totally regretted wasting my time on it. It's bad even for a Harem. And the ending really pissed me off. Just when you think the main protagonist decided who to be with, some other ***** girl has to break it off for you and tell you this isn't over, which is bad since it's the last episode and if there's a second season that'd be stupid. Why make seasons out of a fail harem with a fail plot. Even p0rn scenarios are more elaborate.

Don't watch it. It'll just piss you off. I didn't choose what to watch next, I'll update when I do.

Oh, I'm sorry, I blacked out at ***** girl and am now downloading the series.

Hahaha :D Now that you mention it, I think the words "*****" and "girl" being together makes my advice about not watching Oreshura totally irrelevant :P
