Sony made the same mistake with the PS Vita. They weren't as vocal as Microsoft about screwing their fans over though.

Here's two comments I made on the topic in another discussion.
The installation is to speed up loading and such things, because running more modern games from an optical reader (Blueray/DVD reader) could get really slow.
The used fee will probably be a lot cheaper than the full price because of all the backlash they've gotten. It's a result of their desire to kill the used games market. All game vendors want to kill that market (even Sony).
It's even a possibilty that the console was gonna be literally always-online before they got so much **** for it(now it's once per 24h).
The Kinect is probably even worse than the almost-always-on. Because that even adds to the price of it. Hardware with all the functions of the Kinect 2.0 is not cheap and would probably go for 1000kr/150$ alone. And with a product as niche as the Kinect, it boggles my mind as to why anybody would want it as standard with the console.
So my guess is that the PS4 will be priced roughly the same as the Xbox Lastone (because it is >:D) simply because of Kinect, even if the hardware of the PS4 console itself will be more expensive to make because of the more expensive GPU chip and the background processing chips.
And if they're both at a very similar price I don't see how any sane person could ever even consider buying the Xbox Lastone over the PS4.
Personally, I've got 0 interest in a console though, as consoles are way too locked down for my liking, but the 'Steam Box' has some serious potential.
It's gonna be entirely digital, so no ****ing optical drive that costs you money and are pretty much useless anyways and it's bound to support all kinds of controllers and keyboard+mouse simply because it's running a proper Linux-based OS.
If they just nail the controller and the hardware well, then they've pretty much got me sold on it.
Their target is still gamers, but not just gamers. They wanna target everyone, because they're really damn greedy, lol(it's Micro$oft, what did you expect?).
And in this 'spread' of focus they are essentially spreading themselves thin.
They wanna appeal to gamers, but when they add functions to appeal specifically to people that aren't gamers that's bound to get in the way of the gamers somehow (like the Kinect).
Sony on the other hand are focusing 100% on gamers, and that's why their console is, just from the outlook alone gonna be a superior experience for gamers.
I did write a bit about the used games fee and I kinda wanna keep that short, so I'll just say that all the people making money from making game consoles and games want to kill of used games, because they get no money from that. The only people that get money from used games is the company selling it(Gamestop, GAME e.t.c).
And I'm okay with no "used" games when it comes to digital games, because digital games are an entirely different concept. A digital game cannot be worn out, it'll always be in pristine condition.
But when it comes to physical goods like CDs and such I don't like that they're trying to kill off used games, because they're essentially wasting resources and making customers angry.
Xbox LIVE is and will always be ****ing garbage and you should NOT support it by giving them money. Seriously, don't.
They didn't make it compatible with Xbox360 games because they want to save and make more money. It's expensive to make a console completely backwards compatible(i.e: they save money by not doing it). They're gonna be launching "cloud gaming" services with the Xbox Lastone and you'll be able to play your Xbox360 games through that, but you'll probably have to rebuy them, cuz Micro$oft(i.e: they make more money).
The decisions they make seem rather reasonable from a business standpoint, but they're forgetting one thing entirely. Micro$oft seems to have COMPLETELY forgot the meaning of customer satisfaction in the last couple of years. If something costs them money that will make their customers happy, then they're likely not gonna do it. But the thing is that a happy customer is a customer that is more likely to buy more products.
And this whole deal with forgetting customer satisfaction is probably gonna be Micro$oft's downfall. Their Windows department is completely ignoring what their customers want and so is their Xbox department, and if they lose their biggest cash-cows I doubt they'll be around much longer.

trading in your game will mark it as traded in which invalidates the code you use to play the game on your system. the store that is reselling the disc is only allowed to give a maximum 10% discount over a new copy, and part of that money goes to the publisher and microsoft.
then its up to the store to buy a new activation code, which in the end means they maybe make like 5 bucks and most of the money involved goes back to microsoft.
on another related note, microsoft is going to use the cloud to enhance your gayman experience. just be connected to the internet and the servers will **** more lighting and physics onto your game. so you have to be always online to get the best graffix. thats great microsoft.
