I sort of liked the character, but was made a little too "passive" and caring.
The surrounding side-characters sort of made him look better tough.
Fate Zero was better character and servant wise.

Huh? Err...It is true that Fate/Zero happens like 10 years before Fate/Stay Night, but you should have started with Fate/Stay Night first, since It was aired first. Because of this, Fate/Zero assumes that you are aware of some trivial yet interesting facts/elements that you might not notice if you haven't watched FST prior to FZ.

Why so ?
Fate Night ends the series and you miss a lot if you haven't watched Fate Zero before.
Especially the relation between Shirou and Saber + their memories.
I'd say watching Fate Zero before helps you understand Fate night.
