Your initial skill-level has been estimated to be higher. That should be all there is to it.
In the non-negative kda games, you've most likely been doing better than your friend has, and thus been placed higher than he has.

He also maybe duo'd during his provisionals, or you did.
But the initial placement is kind of silly right now. My friend just did his first 10 games and was placed in Bronze 3. So I went on my silver 5 smurf to carry him out, and after a single victory, he was already picking before me in champ select, meaning his MMR was higher than mine despite being 3 divisions behind me. Then when we got him through promotionals, he skipped straight into Bronze 1.
It's kind of silly that he was placed in bronze THREE, when his MMR was nearly 3 divisions ahead of that, in SILVER.
I dunno, the system is definitely really weird. But if your friend went 6-4 in his promotionals, he should probably be able to gain LP super fast and shoot straight into silver. My friend went 4-6 in his provisionals ( he was 2/0 then had 3 afks in a row lol ), and that alone was enough for a near-silver MMR, so if your friend is 6-4 he will most likely already BE in a silver MMR, providing that like my friend, he didn't duo with anyone in his provisionals.

If you played last season your mmr for placement matches will be higher.
If you didn't play at all it will be naturally lower and if you don't go 10-0 you will end up bronze
However this doesn't seem like the case for you,
You must have had higher mmr opponents.
He must have had lower mmr opponents.
How you guys had different mmr opponents is a mystery to me
Edit: kda doesn't matter riot has said so themselves because nobody would want to play support

i need to delete this account
plus if he loses his first 4 games then wins 6 his mmr will be lower than if he had won 6 then lost 4.
the ranking system is fine even tho placement works on really low samplesizes

That's an exaggeration at best. I went 9-1 in my placement matches on my smurf and was placed in silver 1 with no games last season.

Thanks to Jovy for the sig!
