That is a very good question. I'd probably reduce the amount of population by bioalchemist means, or just by the "1-child rule" (as in China). I can also just bombard Australia until it looks like a banana (or just the whole planet really).

That reminds me of a dream where the Milky Way alien (as in the chocolates) blew up the earth such that it looked like a yellow apple core. When questioned why he did that, he responded "Yellow!".
