No, instead of saving someone by traveling to another line he ends up in a line where that person is saved, while that person is not saved in the line he traveled from.
Him traveling does not create more branches, they are already there, he just doesn't have any contact with them, they are separate worlds.

it certainly makes you think/try hard to follow it. if you do a good job of following it and really get into it you will obviously notice some flaws...including what searz pointed out, but all in all it is a great series imo. also imo, time travel type of stories always have a hard time filling all the gaps.
