@amanda, idk why but I have this weird feeling that people on NA tend to be a lot more rude and disrespectful towards female gamers than on euw, I haven't seen what you've described at all on euw (or at least so rarely that I can't remember)...
funny you say that 'cause the second example I gave was a guy who plays primarily on EUW and just happened to have an NA smurf. We don't really talk anymore 'cause he got super creepy and it made me uncomfortable. x.x

I gotta say having people treat me like a helpless child (even when I know a hell of a lot more about a topic than they do) because of my gender
That's more a general attitude of society, not limited to games and gamers.
Coddling was never been a claimed benefit as far as I can see by the way. The benefits have been being given free stuff. I'm sure Xeres could elaborate since he's been posing as a woman several times.
Quoted:
I have had to make a huge effort to be taken seriously as a gamer
Clearly going about this the wrong way. Don't make an effort. If they are the kind to discriminate like this then they are also the kind that are not worth interacting with. Don't put any effort into *******s. All that comes out in the end is **** :) (hohoho)
Quoted:
or have a guy say after duoing ranked with you for a few hours "sorry, I need to go touch myself because hearing you talk about video games like this is turning me on" (that isn't a joke btw)
WHAAAAAT!?
ARE YOU SERIOUS? Are you sure he wasn't joking? Because that's ****ing insane.
While I think the general tone of the original video was very overdone, but in some cases the original points are actually very true. I'd like to hear the opinions of other male gamers on the topic though though, because I can complain about being discriminated against as a female gamer all I want but that won't get me anywhere.
Of course they are true. That's the very definition of a strawman. But just because they are true doesn't mean that they mean what the author wants them to mean.

That article is the most ridiculous thing I've read in a long time; it lists countless things that have nothing to do with gaming industry and communities specifically but rather with the current status of western culture. I'm also appalled that the writer has the audacity to make claims – himself being a critic – without any real proof, reliable sources, or studies; it's all just a bunch of stuff probably based on real-life experiences from women he is acquainted with.
This is the kind of journalism that has been going on for years in the industry. And people don't think there are problems with gaming journalism... Right.

Oh yeah, that's a possibility. The US isn't exactly socially progressive.
But what remains is the fact that female gamers have a much higher chance of having to face and deal with this harassment nevertheless. I think it shouldn't be that way. Then there's the fact that there are also females that aren't good with words so not everyone can just freeze the brains of some not thinking bullies.
Yeah, it's a pain and something that definitely should go away. But the positive thing is that there are many (me included ofc) actively going against this kind of behavior when they encounter it.
Since the opposing side is generally filled with idiots they can't really win this fight, so as time goes on I can only imagine that this gets better. I'm hopeful for the future.

And in regards to voice chat, I've had a similar experience. I've never liked my voice, even though it's not that high and just slightly higher pitch than normal. But there's also the fact that I sometimes say some really stupid **** in voice chat. Stuff I tend to facepalm pretty hard about afterwards. This led me to kind of move away from that whole thing.

well, he kept saying **** like that and even tried to take it a bit further until I finally just stopped talking to him, so I don't think so, no.

I tend to attract the crazy ones.

responception

@conversations about voice chat if it makes y'all feel better I've been mistaken for a teenage boy before...though that's only been by fellow females, I guess, so it might have been petty *****y nonsense.

Last time I checked everyone on LoL thinks no one else knows what they're talking about. It doesn't matter if you're a girl or a guy.
Like you tell someone that Sunfire cape isn't good on Nami and they just lose their ****.

Basically MOBAFire.

Exactly.

Competitive scenes like LoL can't be counted at all. The amount of premature brats is just too dense there.

@The_Nameless_Bard
Ok, I give that not only the bullies but also the creepy nice guys are a problem (the ones that make you want to hurl).
But if you just had too many run-ins with problematic douches don't make it sound like all of the female (gamer) community has.

It's not like we're only making the males out to be the cause here either. Way too many females know of the situation and abuse it to no end, fueling this problem even further (Astrolia, if that's true, thank you for the example).

But all in all, the main cause of this problem is - like already established since the beginning - the amount of premature teens.
And *SUPRISE* gaming, or better: The whole Internet gets flooded by them.
The whole "LoL/the competitive gaming scene has the most toxic community"-thing is caused by even more ppl from a younger generation getting introduced to the internet at an even earlier age.

And the reason they act like they do, is simply because
a)They know that Ol' daddy "i-net anonymity" is protecting them from RL harm.
b)They are way too young to know better (and kids are *******s).
c)Their RL environment taught them.

By going on offense against female harassment in gaming, no matter what you do or how successful you are, you'll change nothing.
You'll only waste time talking to someone who wouldn't understand you and is nothing more than a product himself.

So you either start fighting the root (and pls not in the feminazi way) or decide not to give a **** and let yourself get dragged down by someone you don't know and never will (probably).

22. I give them a response like "sorry, you're not my type" and then just block them ^^

And add "... my type doesn't have a small *****" after? ◕‿◕
