Lux Support Guide – Part 2: Combos, Laning, and Teamfighting
[hr]
Combos – Your Magical Toolkit
Lux isn't just about poking from a distance – she's a true combo queen. Mastering her ability sequences will help you get picks, control fights, and protect your carries. Here's a breakdown of the most effective combos and when to use them:
Basic Poke (E → Auto):
- Use this combo constantly in lane. Drop your E near the enemy ADC or support when they go for last-hits, then pop it and auto attack if they’re in range. This trades safely and gives Comet/Manaflow value.
Trade Combo (Q → E → Auto):
- This is your go-to trade once you feel safe to use Q. Landing the root guarantees E and an empowered auto. Try not to miss your Q; you don’t have it up often early.
All-In Combo (E → Q → R → Auto):
- Your full burst when you’re ready to eliminate a squishy target. Start with E for slow, follow with Q and immediately R. Finish with an auto for your passive.
Surprise Combo (Flash → Q → E → R):
- For flash picks or clutch engages, this is your playmaker. Flash over a wall or out of vision, root them, and combo quickly. Ideal for catching enemy carries in mid to late-game fights.
Peel Combo (Q → E → Step Back → Auto):
- When enemies dive you or your ADC, root and slow them. Create distance while still using your passive to punish them.
Always remember to auto attack after every spell if it's safe to do so – your passive Illumination adds a lot of extra damage and helps confirm kills or win trades.

Laning Phase – How to Dominate Early
Lux support has one of the strongest early poke kits. Here's how to turn that into lane dominance:
Level 1:
- Start E. Use it to poke as soon as enemies walk up for CS. Stay near your ADC but behind the minion wave. Zone them away with threat of E damage.
Levels 2-3:
- Once you get Q, the kill threat increases. Try to catch enemies off guard with Q into E. Do not fish Q blindly; only use it when you’re sure it’ll land or when your jungler is nearby.
Post Level 6:
- Now your R gives you kill pressure. Look for full combos and surprise bursts. Start trading early to chunk enemies, then go all-in when you have the edge.
Tips for Lane Success:
- Use brush to hide E animations and stay unpredictable.
- Use Q defensively if enemies have hard engage (Leona, Rakan, Blitzcrank).
- Place early Control Wards in river to prevent jungle ganks – you’re immobile and easy to punish.
- Only roam if your ADC can waveclear or reset. Roam mid when enemy bot recalls, especially post-6.
---
Vision Control – How to Set Up for Success
Warding in Lane:
- Use your free Stealth Wards (from your support item) and Spell Slinger’s charges to control river, tri-bush, and jungle entrances.
- Control Wards in river bushes or pixel brush are crucial to avoid ganks and enable jungle support.
Warding After Laning:
- Place Control Wards around objectives like Dragon and Herald before they spawn.
- Push mid with your team and then drop deep wards near enemy jungle.
- Never facecheck alone – use E to check bushes from a safe distance.
Vision wins games, especially when you can fish for Qs from fog of war. One good pick can decide a fight.
---
Teamfighting – How to Be a Backline Menace
In teamfights, Lux plays like a backline artillery mage. You want to peel, poke, and burst – but never overstep. Here's how to play it right:
Before the Fight:
- Poke with E while staying behind tanks and frontline. Build up pressure slowly.
- Place wards and prepare for a pick with Q or E.
During the Fight:
- Position safely. Use Q to root divers or frontline. Drop E in choke points and combo squishies with R when they’re low.
- Wait for the enemy to commit before unloading your full combo. Don’t R too early – it can be a waste if enemies still have mobility or flash.
- Don’t tunnel vision the kill. Sometimes a root on an enemy assassin diving your ADC is more valuable than trying to finish off their backline.
After the Fight:
- Use Q to help chase or disengage.
- Use E to scout fog of war or control zone near objectives.
---
Matchups – What to Know vs. Common Supports
Against Engage Supports (Leona, Nautilus, Rakan):
- Respect their all-in. Don’t use Q aggressively unless they use cooldowns. Save your root to peel, and poke with E instead.
- Buy early boots to dodge skillshots and reposition faster.
Against Hooks (Blitzcrank, Thresh, Pyke):
- Position behind minions. Use E to scout brushes and zone.
- Punish them hard if they miss hook – they’re vulnerable to poke when their engage is down.
Against Enchanters (Lulu, Janna, Nami):
- These are generally easier lanes. Abuse your range advantage. Constantly pressure with E and look for Qs.
- Just don’t get outscaled – snowball early and get control of vision to roam and make plays elsewhere.
Against Poke (Zyra, Brand, Vel’Koz):
- Play like an enchanter. Shield your ADC, poke back with E, and avoid long trades.
- Try to land Qs when they go for their poke combos – your CC can punish overextensions.

Best Synergies – Who Does Lux Love to Lane With?
Lux is great with ADCs that either follow up on her poke or make use of her CC and zoning power. Here are her best duos:
Jhin:
- This combo is terrifying. Your root sets up his W. His traps set up your E. Both of you can snipe enemies from a screen away. Beauty and destruction in perfect harmony.
Caitlyn:
- Q → E → trap → R. What else do you want? You zone with your E, and if you ever land a Q, Caitlyn can trap and burst instantly.
- Together you control lane, bushes, and pressure like a turret duo.
Ezreal:
- Another long-range poke partner. You soften targets with E, he finishes with Q and W. Very safe lane, lots of disengage, and huge late-game damage.
Varus:
- AP or lethality Varus loves having setup. You root, he ults, and enemies disappear. His waveclear helps you roam too.
Miss Fortune:
- Her ultimate and your root = full wipe in teamfights. Your slows and zoning make it easy for her to channel safely.
Xayah, Sivir, Kog’Maw:
- These ADCs love having a peel-oriented Lux. You protect them, poke for them, and catch anyone who dares dive them.
---
Enemy Synergy – Who Counters You?
While Lux can win almost any lane with good poke, some matchups are just hard to deal with. Be careful around:
Rell, Alistar, Leona:
- Hard engage tanks that can punish you for using your Q or standing too far forward. If they Flash → W or E you, you're probably dead. Play safe, use E to scout, and hug your turret early.
Pyke, Blitzcrank:
- Hooks and stealth. If they ever land one, you might not even get to press R. Ward bushes, hug minions, and dodge their roam timings.
Zyra, Brand:
- Extremely oppressive poke mages who can match or outpoke you. Try to land Qs on them to break their rhythm. Rush Spell Slinger + boots to contest lane control.

Skins – Style Points Matter
Let’s be honest – if you’re playing Lux, you care about sparkle, fashion, and magical drip. Here's a quick ranking of Lux skins (purely objective, obviously):
★ Elementalist Lux
- Queen of transformation. 10 forms, stunning animations, and the ultimate flex. If you own this skin, you're probably the boss of the lobby.
★ Space Groove Lux
- Disco, sass, and a ton of pink. Flashy sound effects and great feel. Perfect for this guide’s style.
★ Battle Academia Lux
- The magical schoolgirl aesthetic. Crisp spell effects, very solid voicelines. Bonus points for pink Q particles.
★ Cosmic or Dark Cosmic Lux
- Elegant and powerful. Cosmic Lux has that divine feel – Dark Cosmic is just as stylish but with extra edge.
★ Prestige Porcelain Lux
- Very clean, sparkly visuals and amazing splash art. A more elegant, composed Lux for those who want to look fancy while burning enemies to dust.
You can win in base skin too, but if you’re looking fabulous while doing it? That’s a whole other level of confidence.

Tips and Tricks – Play Like a Prodigy
• Don't fish Q blindly. Always be aware of cooldowns and positioning. Q is your only hard CC – use it wisely.
• Use your E to zone, not just poke. Drop it on choke points or near objectives to force enemies away.
• Position like a mage. You're not a tank. One misstep can cost you everything – hug walls and stay backline.
• Ping cooldowns. When your ult is ready, let your team know. You can snipe from a screen away.
• Time your R properly. Don’t cast too early. Wait for CC or low health. A well-timed laser can change a game.
• Buy Control Wards constantly. Zone, pick, and scout. Lux loves fog of war plays.
• E can scout Baron/Dragon safely. Use it to deny facechecks and bait enemy vision control.
• Adapt your build! Need peel? Skip Mejai’s and get Mikael’s. Facing tanks? Slot in Liandry’s or Void Staff.
• Your Q passes through one target. It can root two people. Try to line it through tanks to catch backliners.
• Flash Q is your power move. Catch enemies off-guard from unexpected angles. Flash over walls or into fog for surprise engages.

💗 Final Thoughts 💗
Playing Lux support isn’t just about winning lanes or hitting lasers. It’s about style, confidence, and controlling the flow of the game from the backline. You’re the eyes of the team, the zone controller, the burst mage, and the disengage master – all wrapped in sparkles and light.
Whether you’re solo climbing or playing with friends, Lux gives you the power to carry from support in your own fabulous way.
So go out there, shine bright, and remind them:
"Sometimes, light is just too powerful to dodge."
