Aery Jarvan Support is Alive and Well [12.3]

FAQ

What makes Jarvan IV good as a support?

Jarvan isn't good at anything. Nobody knows what to build on him, which means he can build Full Tank or Bruiser, ADC items or Lethality. This is a blessing and a curse - Jarvan is never strong, but never weak.

However, most supports aren't like this. They do one thing specifically very well, max 2. This is where Jarvan shines.

Jarvan Support has oppressive poke. He has pretty good healing and shielding. He has pretty good lockdown and peel. No other champion does all 5 of those things. Even someone like Janna can't heal like Jarvan can.

Jarvan also abuses the meta items better than anyone else. Moonstone works better when you're constantly applying shields - since Jarvan can apply these to multiple allies very fast, he gets great value out of it. In a good Jarvan game, you're looking at around 8000 healing and the same amount of shielding, give or take. The ability to constantly proc Moonstone is not to be underestimated.

If you're the kind of person who likes playing Xerath for the first 5 minutes of the game, Leona for the next 10, and then Lulu for the rest of the game, you'll like J4 Support.

Why Aery on Jarvan?

First of all, Jarvan's E has surprisingly high base damage and scaling that never gets brought up because most of his damage usually comes from his Q, Ult, and Sunfire. Combined with Aery and Scorch, you can do a lot of damage on a relatively short cooldown at no risk - on a near un-missable skillshot.

Second of all (and here's the fun part;) Jarvan's Flag's Buff is enough of a buff for Aery to proc. You get around 3-4 Aery procs on your allies - depending on if the first one is on an enemy - and this as you might guess works AMAZING with Moonstone, which procs every time you heal or shield an ally. Simply standing behind your frontlines and throwing a flag near the enemies can heal them for upwards of 700 health per cast in the midgame and potentially more in the lategame.

Another surprising benefit to this is the range. You can give someone most of these benefits from miles away - 60% attack speed, 60% Grievous Wounds, 45 AP, 20 Ability Haste, a 200 HP shield that repeats a few times and maybe a few Moonstone Renewer procs if you're in range. And this isn't an ult, no, it's up all the time for your entire team.

What about early-game?

Jarvan's E does a lot of damage early. Especially combined with Aery, Scorch, and Absolute Focus, if you hit your flags early on (which is quite easy due to the near-instant cast time, long range, and the ability to move while you're doing it) the enemy should be pretty low by level 2.

Even though your lategame initiations fall off because you're quite squishy, early on once you hit the aforementioned level 2 your initiation is deadly. Your high poke damage and enchanter items shouldn't distract you from the fact that Jarvan is a level 2 ganking jungler in the support role.

This also makes him amazing for early roaming. Some supports think that they shouldn't roam pre-6. Those supports are WRONG. If you leave base and start pathing towards botlane, you're probably doing it wrong.

You should be somewhere in the middle of a Bard and a Janna in terms of how much you should be roaming - definitely in nearly every game, but don't peace out away from your ADC. Remember, your poke is much stronger than your initiation, even though both are great. Try to get into the habit of moving towards the bot river and not bot itself after you recall - secure vision around dragon, get control wards down, maybe a cheeky gank mid, the works!
