Introduction
Maokai support benefits synergises with aggressive AD carries, such as Graves, that benefit most from being up in the face of the enemy lane.
Maokai is best picked as a support champion 100% of the time, because he is ****ing awesome, but, if you need to convince your team that it's the best decision they'll ever make, just tell them that it compensates for a squishy top lane/jungle.
You're probably thinking "Regrowth Pendant first? That leaves me with no money for wards."
Too ****ing right, it does. You don't need wards. You are wards. Grab one for river to protect you from ganks, then proceed to sapling the **** out of wherever you suspect your enemy is.
Following the standard double GP10 support build, you're going to start situationaly building. Is their AP carry getting fed as **** by your stupid, non-tree middle? Merc treads/Aegis first. Is your AD carry and idiot and handing out free kills to their bottom? Ninja Tab/Frozen Heart first. Easy stuff.

There's no in-depth explanation needed regarding your runes.
Scaling blues and reds because you're taking very little magic damage during the first half of the game, and flat armour yellows and health quints because, guess what, the only thing hitting you in bottom lane is physical-damage-dealing AD carry, you dingus.

Saplings first because they're free ****ing wards, man. This is why you're the best support in the world. FREE WARDS. You'll never be left thinking "Oh, ****, I wish I'd bought more wards so I can see if they're in that bush right now," because you're literally throwing wards all over the joint.
Following that, you're grabbing Twisted Advance because you're jungler's off the hook with double buffs and has decided to give your AD carry a huge advantage by killing the enemy's, so you're going to fly through the air and root them to the ground then spam your taunt while Mr. Jungle and Mr. Carry tear them a new *******.
Next step, you're maxing Arcane Smash for team fights. Because nothing says "get out of my way, I'm a ****ing tree," like interrupting and slowing an entire enemy team.
