TL;DR Cheat Sheet
Permaban: Mordekaiser. Even if you can play the matchup, your teammates still have to play against him and will feed. Jayce is 2nd in line but more people play morde
Summoners: Flash + Ignite. Take TP only if you're getting camped or your recall timings are unplayable.
Runes (default):
Sorcery: Comet, Manaflow or Nimbus, Transcendence, Scorch (Gathering Storm vs scaling).
Secondary: Inspiration (Triple Tonic + Cosmic Insight) default. Precision or Resolve matchup-dependent.
Start: Doran's Blade + pot (default). Dshield into poke only. Long Sword + Refill if you're much stronger level 1.
Boots: Ionian Lucidity after 2nd item. Always. Swifties or Steelcaps only if forced.
Build: Sheen, Essence Reaver, Lucidity Boots, LDR, Infinity Edge, Crit Cloak, Situational, finish Shieldbow.
Shieldbow 2nd item instead of LDR vs assassin or ADC-heavy comps.
DO NOT BUY COLLECTOR. LDR is always better.
Ultra-late: Full build and the game is still going? Sell boots for Youmuu's or another situational item.
Lane win condition: Barrel the middle of the lane around 0:45. Defend it with your life. Combo off it immediately. Passive auto before is ideal, passive auto after is enough. Nimbus + Ignite turns trades into lethal run-downs.
Wave: Cheater recall default. Freeze whenever possible. Never fast push if the enemy is in lane.
Macro: Post-13, group. Always. You are not frontline. You are cleanup, zoning, and ult utility. Save TP for objectives.
Ult philosophy: Ult for your teammates, not for yourself.

Guide Goal and Playstyle Philosophy
This guide is for new Gangplank players who want real fundamentals, and for GP mains who want to optimize their game.
It's a repeatable system:
You are not a hypercarry, no matter what you think or how fed you are. GP is a unique character in how if you make 1 mistake, you will be killed by a 0/10 support that just finished their item. GP CAN become a 1v9 duelist if piloted correctly, but it takes a perfect setup to get there. Build, runes, and decision-making all follow from that.
I have over 1.5m mastery on GP total, and I am streaming my SoloQ climb HERE
It's a repeatable system:
-
Create a barrel zone in lane.
Force favorable trades and wave control around it.
Spike on Sheen and snowball with ignite threat.
Transition to teamfight zoning and cleanup.
1-Shot the enemy at 4+ Items
Win via objectives.

Runes
Default Page (Sorcery primary)
Manaflow Band or Nimbus Cloak
Manaflow: lanes where you won't get kited and don't need emergency MS.
Nimbus: everything else, especially when playing for Ignite run-downs.
Transcendence. Haste is too good. Don't go Absolute Focus, you have such low HP it's never up.
Scorch default, or Gathering Storm into scaling champs or impossible matchups.
Why Comet over First Strike: First Strike is almost never worth it. Comet scales way harder. The gold is nice but you lose too much in return. Most champs can keep your rune turned off unless you are a god at spacing. Just run Comet.
Secondary, matchup dependent
Domination secondary only in truly free matchups, or if you are building AP. Otherwise it's almost always a downside.
"Emergency Mode", Grasp Page
For lanes that feel impossible with Comet (Akali is the classic example):
Grasp of the Undying, Demolish, Second Wind or Overgrowth, Overgrowth or Unflinching.
Start Q, do the classic Q spam, farm, and survive.
Fleet Footwork
Fleet is FF in champ select. If you want to run Fleet, just run Grasp instead. Don't do it. You will do nothing all game until 4 items and you will give up your lane because you picked bad runes.
Shards
Default: Adaptive, Adaptive, Flat HP.
Scaling HP only in low-fight lanes.

You get TP free from the lane quest. Ignite plus Nimbus turns every barrel + Q + passive trade into a potential kill.

Starting Items and Cheater Recall
Start
When
Doran's Blade + pot
Default. Fight lanes. Wins the early coinflip.
Doran's Shield
Poke lanes only. Never into fight lanes, the stats will not save you and Dblade gives you the edge in the coinflip.
Long Sword + Refillable
When you are much stronger level 1, or you are confident you can win without inting. Best start if you can afford it.
-
Crash the first cannon wave.
Back immediately with gold in hand.
Default first buy:
-
T1 Boots + Refillable Pot, or
Glowing Mote + Refills.
Get back before the wave resets and start the Sheen path while still ahead on tempo.
Build Path
Core Build (default order)
Essence Reaver
Ionian Lucidity Boots (after 2nd item)
Lord Dominik's Regards
Infinity Edge
Crit Cloak
Situational Item
Finish Cloak into Shieldbow
Build Rules
Shieldbow early swap (2nd item instead of LDR):
Trinity Force flex (1st item alternative to ER):
Situational Slot Menu
Rule of thumb: dive comp goes Death's Dance, normal or high-HP comp goes Liandry's.
Boots
Lucidity Boots after 2nd item. After ER if no nimbus.
Swaps only if forced:
Lucidity is the answer in ALL. OTHER. GAMES.
Ultra-Late Game, Sell Boots
Once you are full build (6 items) and the game is still going, sell your Lucidity Boots for another situational item. You're crit capped and haste capped, and MS matters less than another damage or utility slot.
Options:
Second defensive item (Death's Dance, Maw, Guardian Angel) if you are getting collapsed on.
Second anti-tank tool (Liandry's if you skipped it, more percent pen).
Endless hunger (if you are facing 3+ mele champs0
DO NOT BUY COLLECTOR
The math does not add up. LDR is always better. Do not get trapped, your damage will fall off.
The only time to consider Collector is in games where you do not need Shieldbow at all, and you are into 3+ ADC champs.
This also ties into your ult philosophy (Section 12). You ult for teammates to get kills, not for yourself. If you build Collector, you become a gold black hole. You need every kill to have a function, and unless you can solo 1v9 with a tilted ADC, you lose the game.

You want more HP and stats.
You don't plan to buy a situational item and would rather slam 4 crit items after Sheen.
Situational Slot Menu

Death's Dance
Default pick. Dive comps and AD burst. The item is broken.
Endless Hunger
Melee-heavy comps, free healing.
Liandry's Torment
Normal comps or high-HP teams. Good stats, damage amp, and magic burn.
Maw or Hexdrinker
Heavy AP burst.
Executioner's into Chainsword
Only when vs 2+ Healing champs, a single healer usually can be out damaged
Rule of thumb: dive comp goes Death's Dance, normal or high-HP comp goes Liandry's.
Boots
Lucidity Boots after 2nd item. After ER if no nimbus.
Swaps only if forced:
-
Swifties vs Ashe and other heavy slow lanes.
Plated Steelcaps vs Tryndamere and other AA crit threats.
Lucidity is the answer in ALL. OTHER. GAMES.

Skill Order
Max order: Q, then E, then W.
Rule: If you didn't take Triple Tonic, make sure your barrels (E) are max level before leveling ultimate to lvl 2. Barrel timing and damage matter more than R rank in lane.
(AP Gangplank has different leveling priorities and is out of scope for this guide.)
-
Level 1: Q
Level 2: E
Level 3: second point in Q, unless you are low, in which case take W for the heal.

Combos
Basic Lane Trade
If you have fewer than 2 barrels in reserve, don't burn them, just Q spam.
3-Barrel Combo
Place 2 barrels, blow up the first, and place the 3rd as it's chaining.
Caveat: 3-barrel combos are a scam in most matchups. Only use them:
Double Passive Reset (requires Legend: Alacrity)
Lethal Rundown (after landing barrel + Q + passive)
This is your bread-and-butter lane lethal. Practice it.
Fast Push Math (post-Sheen + lvl 5)
Casters die to barrel + Q + 2 autos each (non-passive). Passive auto a melee or cannon.
One-Part (undodgeable)
The chain detonates before they can react. Excellent into ranged tops or laners that are not playing in bushes
-
Stand on a barrel.
Place a second barrel out from you.
Auto your barrel.
Q the enemy.
If you have fewer than 2 barrels in reserve, don't burn them, just Q spam.
3-Barrel Combo
Place 2 barrels, blow up the first, and place the 3rd as it's chaining.
Caveat: 3-barrel combos are a scam in most matchups. Only use them:
-
Into ranged tops.
Late game when your haste makes chaining viable.
Double Passive Reset (requires Legend: Alacrity)
-
Put down 2 barrels.
Q one.
Auto the enemy twice as your passive resets.
Profit.
Lethal Rundown (after landing barrel + Q + passive)
-
Run at them.
Ignite immediately if you have Nimbus, for the MS.
Drop a barrel in the path they are walking.
Auto + Q the barrel to detonate it instantly and passive auto them.
Repeat until they leave lane or die.
This is your bread-and-butter lane lethal. Practice it.
Fast Push Math (post-Sheen + lvl 5)
Casters die to barrel + Q + 2 autos each (non-passive). Passive auto a melee or cannon.
One-Part (undodgeable)
-
Place a barrel in middle-lane bush.
Stand outside Q range.
Q the barrel.
As soon as the Q fires, place a second barrel right next to it.
The chain detonates before they can react. Excellent into ranged tops or laners that are not playing in bushes
Wave Management
Cheater Recall (default)
Crash first cannon, back, T1 boots + refill (or Glowing Mote + refills), return before wave resets.
Freeze Philosophy
Freeze as much as possible. Sit on a barrel, enemies can't contest. They also can't freeze on you, because you can barrel + ult the wave anytime.
If you get frozen on and fail to break it, good. Now you have time to think about the mistakes that led to it.
Never Fast Push If The Enemy Is In Lane
Slow push only. Use Q as much as possible. Fast pushing into an enemy in lane loses you the game.
Fast push is acceptable when:
Learn to slow push. It's the single highest-value wave skill for this champion.

Laning Phase
The Core Win Condition (LEVEL 1 FIGHT)
Barrel the middle of the lane around 0:45. Defend it with your life. Combo off it immediately.
Barrels almost always go on your casters. Stand in your barrel.
If you took Nimbus Cloak and they try to fight back, Ignite immediately for MS and run them down.
Pre-Sheen (before 950g)
Play safe. Q spam. Don't waste barrels on minions unless you can land the trade.
Post-Sheen (the spike)
Place barrels on the melee minions. Standard combo:
Exception: if the enemy is within lethal range of ignite + passive + Q, go for it.
Post-Level 8
Once your timings are reduced, you can run down enemies by landing auto + Q on your barrel to detonate it instantly and reset your passive. This is the bread-and-butter lethal combo. Practice it in the training tool until it's muscle memory. Place the barrel in the path the enemy is walking and repeat to run them down.
Power Spikes
Every item pre-IE: meaningful spike.
Level 7 and Level 13: barrel timing reduced, huge lane/skirmish spikes.
Infinity Edge: the big mid-game spike. Last major spike until full build.
Full build: sell boots, become a menace.

Matchups
Permaban
Mordekaiser. Even if you can play the matchup, your teammates still have to play against him and will feed.
Tier List Overview
Featured Matchup Notes
Singed. Farm lane. DO NOT CHASE. DO NOT FIGHT. Buy Cull and hit minions, let him proxy. Tell your jungler to ignore him unless it's a free kill. Ult to pick up kills if he's low.
Ornn. Farm lane. You will lose trades. Just farm.
Kayle / Nasus. Free with good wave management. Deny them resources and the lane is yours.
Tanks (Tahm, Malphite, Ornn, Maokai, Sion, Cho'Gath). Medium difficulty. You probably win early, but they outscale and will solo-kill you fast if you misplay.
Sett. Hard but winnable. Never fight him melee range. Sidestep the W.
Riven. Hard if you let her on top of you. Never leave barrel range. Auto your barrel before her ability cast finishes (Q3 or EW). Discipline > mechanics in this matchup.
Poppy. No one plays Poppy top. If they do, farm tank lane. No notes.
Urgot. Weird. Play him like a ranged top. Don't walk up. Barrel + Q and walk away. Only walk up if he misses E. You can frame-perfect orange the E and not get tossed. Orange the ult.
Kennen. Miserable. You won't be able to barrel and you'll be CC'd on repeat. Get cheater recall early and play back.
Assassins. Easy lane early, but they one-item you and start killing. Build Shieldbow 2nd item.
Renekton. Easy. Space his E and stand on barrel. If he Ws you, orange immediately and run backwards.
Fiora. Bait marks with barrel placement. CTRL+1 can bait out riposte. Don't hit her riposte. Get good at S-keying to not blow your passive.
Jax. Reasonable lane. Time your orange on his stun. Put barrel down and let him jump into it. Q the barrel as soon as he starts the jump. If you orange the stun and auto, you get a clean barrel + passive combo.
Gragas. Hard lane. No notes. Just survive.
Yasuo. Free lane. Q spam and barrel combos.
Dr. Mundo. Inevitable nightmare. Try to win before 25 minutes. Buy antiheal.
Mordekaiser. Even if you can play the matchup, your teammates still have to play against him and will feed.

Mid and Late Game Macro
You are not frontline. Come in behind your team and clean up.
If you find yourself at the front on a lucky crit barrel, immediately drop ult on their head, run forward, and ping your team to engage.
Objectives win games. Help your jungler as much as possible.
Herald is fake. Don't waste resources on it.
Save TP for objectives. If grouping isn't happening, don't keep forcing it. Go farm a side lane and drop R when they fight.
Even if you're behind, you are incredibly valuable. Pick up farm when safe and group.
Your team will take stupid fights. Don't be at the front of them. Come in behind and clean up.
Ult Philosophy
You ult for your teammates, not for yourself.
This is the single most important macro concept for Gangplank, and it's why you don't build Collector.
Core Rules
Only ult top if it guarantees a kill or saves you from a gank.
Sniping: you can snipe cheeky low-HP escapes, but only if the target has full gold value or a shutdown. Otherwise don't waste it. A double assist botlane is avg 200-300g.
And S2 2026 will grant you 90 BONUS EXPERIENCE for takedowns. This is broken on GP, as you can get A FIFTH OF A LEVEL from pressing R botlane
On Objectives
Your job is to zone. And to punish mispositioning.
Any time the enemy might be taking an objective, you can ult, but it's not super worth unless your jungler is going for a steal or the teams are about to fight.

Place a barrel where you think the enemy will approach.
The second they show, attempt to combo.
Ult to slow or zone them back.
You become a wall. Do not run forward. Only move toward your team after you barrel + ult.
If enemies give up the contest, burn the objective with your team.

Save TP for obj fights. The 4-item timer on TP is long. Don't waste it clearing a wave.
Barrel zoning at pit entrances is your single highest-value contribution to an obj fight. Learn the common approach paths on Baron and Soul fights.
Advanced Tech and Tips
Learn these timings:
Jax stun: orange the stun, then Q barrel + passive.
Renekton W: orange immediately and run backwards.
Urgot E: frame-perfect orange and you don't get tossed over him.
Urgot R: orange the ult.
Darius E: Q and then click behind you immediately, you will space the E
CTRL+1
Use CTRL+1 (taunt emote) to bait Fiora riposte, Riven E, Garen W, Yi Q, etc. Cheap, funny, effective.
S-keying to Preserve Passive
If your passive auto is charged and the enemy disengages, or has a shield, damage block (riposte) S-key (stop command) to not wasteit. Save it for when the ability times out. Discipline here wins games against Fiora, Riven, and anyone who dodges in and out of trade range or has something to eat the passive.
Barrel Placement Philosophy
Pre-place barrels at choke points before objective fights.

How to Practice
Practice Tool Drills (do these daily)
Double passive reset. Place 2 barrels, Q one, auto the dummy twice as passive resets.
Ranged top bush combo. Barrel in bush, stand outside Q range, Q, place second barrel as Q fires.
Orange timing. Set a bot Renekton / Jax / Riven in practice tool and practice cleansing their key ability.
What To Grind First, Second, Third
Second: combos. Lethal rundown, double passive reset.
Third: macro. Ult usage, TP saves, post-13 grouping, objective zoning.

Did I hit my Sheen spike on time?
Did I fast push into the enemy? (If yes, why?)

Did I go frontline when I shouldn't have?
Did I save TP for objectives?
