Introduction
Runes are a very personal thing. I prefer the armor because as a top most top characters only deal attack damage and very little magic damage. The attack damage quints are just to give you more base damage and get an edge over your opponent. The armor pen marks are just there to make you avoid having to buy an armor penetration item later. The glyphs as well just allow you to get an item later.
So Garen is a very easy character to build once you know how. In this i will give you all the major options and you need to use your judgement in game on how to adapt properly. You start off with boots 3 pots nothing to special there. Mercury treads and sunfire cape are necessary to do well with Garen I would suggest building those items first. Sunfire allows you to deal extra damage while spinning. Here's where my build gets different from others. Yosumu's Ghostblade is usually an item for weaker characters like master yi etc. with garen however it is incredible. Here is why it gives you cooldown reduction which how he is supposedly balanced out. He gets critical strike chance which makes his Q or R even scarier if it crits. The active with Ghostblade makes Garen hard as hell to catch and is a good initiation tool and way to chase down champs. The extra attack damage and armor pen are just like the icing on the cake for Garen. Now this is where you have to understand how your team is doing, how their team is doing and how well your doing. You always need to counter there Carry on their team if they are doing well. Force of nature is good to counter them if there ap is doing well and makes garens health regen ridiculously high if his passive is up. However, if the ap characters on their team are awful don't even bother its becomes a waste of time at that point. Warmogs is pretty much a must buy but you don't have to if you want more damage but 99% of the time get Warmogs. I like saving that towards mid game because that's when you can start farming really well with your spin. KNOW YOUR ROLE!!! I can not stress this enough. If your team does not have a tank you need to build tankier. If your team has a tank make him tank and spank so you can be more useful. The reason this is relevant because frozen mallet and atama's impaler are great items for garen just not if you are your teams tank. Zekes herald is good for garen because it allows you to get the buff for your team. Now if you are doing terrible you will have to change it up a bit. Get the two gold items they help you a lot to stay in the game and make it so you don't get phased out really quickly. YOU ALWAYS NEED THESE THREE ITEMS WITH GAREN GHOSTBLADE SUNFIRE AND MERC TREADS. These are not adaptable do not take these out they will guarantee an edge over the other team.
Nothing too fancy max out your Q then E then W while getting your ult upgrades when you can. The Q is good to max first because it your primary dmg dealer. Then your E because it will be your best friend in team fights which normally don't happen till this point in gameish. W is last because its mainly a utility ability.
This build allows Garen's stats and abilities to be used most effectively with this build. The more health regen, cooldown reduction, and health with garen the better. The highest rated guide for garen has an Infity edge in it. I tried that and it made me scratch my head. it makes sense on garen but it is a huge expenditure and not really worth it.
With garen you have two abilities in lane to do damage after they both are on cooldown go back to the bush or farm. You will be useless while the cooldowns are up. Use bushes to zone people. If you use your Q and run at someone out of the bush you can usually catch them. use your e after you hit the Q or it expires(only if your by enemies).
Garen is OP remember that do well early game you will have a good late game. If you stick to the build and don't die you can do incredibly well. Garen is a Great starter character. I've been told a lot that Garen is for noobs. Well here's my question to leave you with: Is it good to play and easy champ well or a hard one poorly?
