Irelia is an interesting build. She is extremely item dependent. Many people say she is a a bad Champion because of little synergy of her abilities. Like a mage, you can stack ability power and it will help all abilities with damage or like a fighter you can get increase attack damage and that will help all abilities because they are physical damage based. Irelia's 2 primary damage based attacks are based off both. The Bladesurge stems off your physical damage while Equilibrium Strike stems off Ability power (Magic Damage). This makes it tricky to give her a decent item build that compliments her well. In essence, she is automatically a hybrid and you must treat her as such so that she can have a high output of damage or to be able to perform well. When it comes down to it, she is an assasin. The only problem is she is an item dependent assasin. Unlike Shaco, Katerina or other Assasins, she needs to be complimented well in order to be able to fulfill her role fully.
Now, many people say that she can be a tank or off-tank. Yes, that is very possible especially because of her Hiten Style which allows her to regain health even against towers. Its not a life steal ability, its better then that! Its an ability that regardless of what you are hitting, a tower, inhibitor or what-not, you are regaining health. On top of that, her passive allows her to get out of CCs much quicker without needing to be equipped with any items but Mercury's Treads do add more survivability. So if you are considering a tank, she is worth a few test runs for you when she becomes available as a free character to play.
Now, the Build I have I like to call it the 'Ceramic Blade' build. She can hit hard and quick and do a hell of a lot of burst damage while also giving minimal chance for the target to get away. Now, the item combination to achieve here is as such:
- Mercury's Treads
- Nashor's Tooth
- Hextech Gunblade
- Guinsoo's Rageblade
- Youmuu's Ghostblade
- Lich Bane
Purpose of Build
My focus here was AS/AP/AD with also adds a bit of survivability from the Gunblade having a 20% life steal on top of your Hiten Style. Lich Bane gives you extra damage which nearly doubles your attack because of the stacked amount of Attack Power you would have with these items. Guinsoo adds to the Lich Bane ability because of the stacking ability.
Now, 2 of these items got actives which you need to get used to using and if you do, you can do a lot of output and let little will get away. The Ghostblade, which many are familiar with, and the Gunblade. If you can time it all right, you will do the combo of Q>W>E>Q now you can either proc Ghostblade before the first Q or right when you get in to hit W. When the chase is on, this is where your Gunblade pays off along with your exhaust and equilibrium. First, Hit E if you can, if not, Gunblade, then recombo in order but this time Q>E>W>Q and the exhaust and recombo again. The 2nd combo should get them but if not, you should have enough output to get them on the third. This combo is great for End Game fighting when safe areas are too far back and few characters could get away. Adding up the stun time between the 3 techniques, you will have quite possibly, a total of 10 seconds where the target is moving less then 60%. On top of that, the Gunblade does additional 300 damage with its shot, helping you kill off the Target Champion.
As for Masteries, its best to focus on offensive for this build, having the exhaust increase effect and also the bonus cooldown on your ignite for early game. End Game, it makes little difference but every bit helps. Especially if your the guy who the target always (Alls) with less then 20HP. From being Offensive, add some survival points in either defensive with increase armor and mag resistance or with health regen in utility.
For runes, here you want to diversify to help your build. Get runes that increase attack speed (helps Hiten/life steal), mana regen as you do live off your abilities once your cooldowns are low you just start hitting them over and over again and then cool down abilities. With this build, your Ultimate will have a cooldown of 24 seconds and thats without the monster buff.
Bladesurge: Irelia dashes forward to strike her target. If it kills the target, Bladesurge's cooldown refreshes and refunds 35 Mana.

Hiten Style: Irelia is skilled in the art of Hiten, passively giving her physical attacks health restoration. Activating Hiten Style gives her physical attacks true damage for a short period.
Passive: Physical Attacks restore 10/14/18/22/26 health.
Active: Irelia's physical attacks deal 15/30/45/60/75 true damage for 6 seconds.
Cost 40/40/40/40/40 Mana
Equilibrium Strike: Irelia's attack balances the scales, dealing damage and slowing the target. However, if the target has a higher Health % than Irelia, then the blow stuns the target instead.
Irelia pierces her target, dealing 80/135/190/245/300 (+1) magic damage and slowing the target by 60% for 1/1.25/1.5/1.75/2 second(s).
If the target has a higher Health % than Irelia, she stuns the target for the duration instead.
Cost 50/55/60/65/70 Mana
Transcendent Blades: Irelia summons 4 spirit blades which she can fling to deal magic damage and siphon life from enemies they pass through.

Cost 100/100/100 Mana
PASSIVE: Ionian Fervor - Reduces the duration of stuns, slows, taunts, fears, snares, and immobilizes for each nearby enemy champion.
1 Champion: 10%
2 Champions: 25%
3 Champions: 40%
Abilities for this build, I actually go Equilibrium Strike/Hiten Style/Bladesurge, in that order. Once I have Bladesurge, I don't tree it anymore, its a matter of just closing distances, nothing more. Euilibrium and Hiten are necessary for survival. Once you get ultimate, max it every chance you get. I use it mainly as a farming tool especially since getting a low cooldown is a priority for me. This thing is great tool to 2v1 defend a turret because you kill off the minions quickly before the opponent has a good chance to start attacking the turret. The Ult is also good for feeding yourself health. When you running away, hit the map to run back and then trigger this and fire it backwards to regen health. Another survival technique as you can say.
I am going to try and update this more as I can but right now, this is what I have figured in terms of an offensive build. When it comes down to it, this is an intercept build, or assasin build for Irelia. If you are the first engaged in a Team Fight, yes, you are going to die. You don't tank with Shaco as an assasin build, so don't tank Irelia with this build. Make a tank build for her if thats what your interested in.
January 9 Edit: Ok, so I finally had about a month to play around more with Irelia. I change my item build from its original build. It helps with survivability with the Omen. Now, one thing with gameplay about Irelia, she IS NOT AN INITIATOR!! Unless you are ready to die in a team fight, don't be the first one in. Irelia can have great DPS using her abilities. I have been able to solo a warwicks several times. The low health stun is the key. After that, just spam anything and everything, eventually, they will be out of the fight. I have killed warwicks with half my build, with only maybe 1 or 2 final items. Irelia is great, she is just not meant engage in massives fights. From what I have come to understand of this champion, if you like Akali, you will like Irelia.
