Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
Jax, Grandmaster at Arms
It is seldom the case where a champion is defined by his actions after joining the League of Legends rather than before. Such is the case for Jax, for whom the argument could be made that he is the most prolific tournament fighter currently at the Institute of War. The self-proclaimed ''Armsmaster of the League'' has rattled off a streak of consecutive wins that to this day has not been matched. Concerned that the perceived objectivity of the battle arenas would be questioned by a fighter who was unbeatable, the League at one time created special sanctions for Jax. The burly fighter responded by imposing his own special condition as a means of protest he limited himself to fight using only a brass lamppost. Neither the League's sanctions nor his own put a significant dent in his winning ways. The League has since rescinded its sanctions, but Jax has not. To this day, he fights and fights well with his trusty brass lamppost.
''Be advised - there have been an outbreak of lamppost-shaped bruises in the League of Legends.''
(Passive) Equipment Mastery - Jax's prowess with weapons and armor increase his fortitude as he gains equipment:
Jax gains 3 health per point of Attack Damage received from items.
Jax gains 2 health per point of Ability Power received from items.
This happens to be a great passive and we try to take advantage of it by using Guinsoo's Rageblade (195 health), The Bloodthirster (180 health initially then 300 health when fully maxed), and Infinity Edge (240 health) for more survivability.
Leap Strike - Jax leaps toward a target. If it's an enemy, he smacks it in the face with his lamppost.
Jax leaps towards a target. If it's an enemy, he attacks it and deals an additional 50/75/100/125/150 (+0.8) magic damage.
This is Jax's signature skill, we generally max this first to lower the cooldown. Leap Strike works as our initiation, chasing, and escape skill.
Empower - Jax's charges his weapon with energy, causing his next attack to damage all nearby enemies.
Jax charges his weapon with energy, causing his next attack to deal an additional 40/60/80/100/120 (0.2 + ) magic damage to all nearby enemies.
Empower is our spam skill for farming and AOE damage. We will generally max this second because of its low cooldown, farming capabilities, and damage output increase.
Counter Strike - Jax's prowess allows him to dodge enemy attacks frequently. After avoiding an attack Jax can quickly stun surrounding enemies.
Passive: Increases Jax's dodge chance by 10/12/14/16/18%.
Active: Jax stuns surrounding enemies for 1 second and deals 80/100/120/140/160 (+0.6) magic damage to them.
Usable only within 7 seconds of dodging an attack.
Counter Strike is a great skill and the main reason we become so dangerous in team fights, if we were able to get all five team members in radius then we would have 5 seconds of combined stun, name another champion that can do that. We do max this skill last though because past level 1 we only increase 80 damage and 8% dodge.
(Ultimate) Relentless Assault - Jax's greatest talent lies in his ability to grow stronger with every attack. Successive attacks increases his attack speed temporarily, and every 3rd blow will devastate his target.
Jax's basic attacks increase his attack speed by 6/10/14% for a short duration. Additionally, every two attacks enhances Jax's next attack for 140/170/210 (+0.7) bonus magic damage.
Attack speed stacks up to 10 times.
Our main damage output skill, Jax's ultimate is very good and should be maxed whenever available. Being a passive ability it gives more mana to spend on our other skills, and it makes us one of the best 1v1 fighters in the game.
It took me a long time to find a build that was strong both early game, mid game, and late game but after lots of play testing this is what I have come up with.
The first item we buy depends on how comfortable you feel in the lane phase as Jax, for more experienced players our starting items are a Daggerand one Health Potion. For newer players I recommend starting with Brawler's Glovesand two Health PotionsAfter our initial items (in the long run it doesn't matter which set) we go for our boots Ninja Tabiand then a Vampiric Scepteras we transition into the mid game.
Now that we are in the mid game we are first going to upgrade either our Brawler's Glovesor Daggerinto a Zeal. Finishing out the mid game we power out a Guinsoo's Rageblade.
In the majority of games we will only get one to two items into the our late game build before someone wins but encase of a long game I will list what to do. The first thing to do late game is to upgrade your Zealinto a Phantom Dancer. Afterwards we try and make an Infinity Edgethen upgrade our Vampiric Scepterinto The Bloodthirster. And if the game continues past this I would personally just work towards another of The Bloodthirster
21/9/0 is in my opinion the only way you can be effective with masteries as Jax, but within the offense tree there are many combinations to chose from. My favorite is listed at the top.
I am a strong believer that runes should be picked according to a persons play style, but i do strongly recommend getting dodge seals as they are very effective. Personally I think that Jax's armor and magic resist totals are pretty low by themselves so I use my runes to compensate.
Ghost: Ghost is the perfect two for one spell, the best escape spell and the best chasing spell. Don't be afraid to pop ghost if you think it might guarantee a kill.
Ignite: Ignite is a great spell for ensuring kills or reducing healers effectiveness, also if you get the Burning Embers mastery it will increase the damage of your Leap Strike, Counter Strike, and Relentless Assault while on cooldown.
Empower + Leap Strike = The damage of the two stack for one large damage burst. Also if your opponents are harassing you too much, you can use Empower from the bush and hit them with it, then Leap Strike back to your allies to avoid damage.
If you aggro a creep wave right before a fight you can hopefully dodge an attack so your Counter Strike will be ready for use before you start.
When about to initiate a fight its good to two hit a minion so that your next attack will trigger Relentless Assault, but you have to be quick because the consecutive hit effect wears off fast.
JUNGLE JUNGLE JUNGLE, I can't express how important it is to continuously kill the monsters in the jungle, the experience and gold you get is a must for this build. but do not take the buffs until late game, your teammates can most likely put them to better use.
Once you have hit lvl 7 if you can get some spare time go heal, then go kill Dragon in the jungle. When fighting dragon at low levels make sure you spam Leap Strike and Counter Strike whenever they are available, but don't waste your mana on empower.
Jax can't last long if he is being focused in a team fight, use the fact that you can leap strike to your allies to dive in and out of team fights.
Jax is not a highly picked champion, mostly because people underestimate him. Jax is a great champion that is superb at chasing, 1v1 fights (Jax may be the only champion in the game that Warwick runs away from in the jungle), and straight up being a DPS boss that gets tons of kills and deals tons of damage. But it's alright that people don't play him, more for us- (""((,;,,;,))"") - ROAR - Foshoyo
