Lux Passive Ability
Introduction
Before we dive into how to play Lux, lets talk about the strengths and weaknesses of Lux.
Pros:
- Good Burst
- Excellent Mid Lane
- Great CC
- Long range skills
- Decent AoE shield
- 24 seconds CD on your ult late game. Seriously, WTF!
Cons:
- Very squishy
- Focused hard if not careful
- Not as viable in ranked compared to other AP carries
- Can't carry your team as easily as someone like Annie

I have seen plenty of Luxs start with Q, Light Binding, and I believe it is not as effective as starting with E, Lucent Singularity.
When in mid, most champions start off by standing behind minions, and with E, you can throw an AoE slow, blow it up, and hit them with your passive charge. If you start with Q, you may not get the opportunity to harass your opponents as effective. Most people when midding against Lux (including me) tries to remember the rule, not to be snared. But after a while, especially when you push them away from their minion wave with E, they forget. Then comes your opportunity to snare them.
In a duo lane, Lucent Singularity can be used to check bushes for enemy champions, and you can attack both enemy champions with the same spell.

Summoner spells! When I first bought Lux, I used Clarity and Flash. Clarity, because I kept spamming skills and I was desperate for mana. Flash, because it can be used offensively and defensively. But later on, I managed to use my mana wisely, and clarity became quite a waste. Then, I tried Clairvoyance, and it turned out perfect on Lux. Great for sniping with your laser, great for ganking, great for supporting. You can stand at your tower and make a perfect shot all the way to the enemy tower without them even expecting it.
Take at least 1 of these spells:
Flash - Offensive and defensive.
Clairvoyance - Offensive (laser) and Utility
Clarity - Utility
Ghost - Offensive and Defensive. You can run so that your skillshots hit accurately, or you could just be running away from their whole team.
Not so good choices for Lux but still viable:
Heal - Defensive, can bait some idiots and kill them in seconds
Teleport - Offensive and Defensive. You can teleport to another lane and snipe an enemy champion from that angle
Cleanse - Defensive. You can get out of CC and blow them up afterwards. Great for escaping
Never get these:
Rally - This spell is just stupid
Fortify - Your tank should get this
Exhaust - Unless you're trolling by building AD Lux, don't get this. (AD Lux works surprisingly well. I was bored one day and I built AD Lux. Got more kills but more deaths)
Revive - You should be standing back so NO.
Smite - Jungle Lux is simply impossible so NO.
Ignite - You should never be close enough to use ignite! Especially in team fights. If you get that close you're dead in seconds.

MY BUILD
Well Doran's Ring is probably the best item an AP carry can start with, besides Boots. But you should build situationally. If you're against someone like Karth or Cass then obviously start with boots.
Sorcerer Shoes or Ionian Boots of Lucidity
If you follow this guide, you are an AP Carry. Not a Support mage. CDR is always good, but you get enough from your Morellos.
Morellos. Nothing to say. This item is just about compulsory for Lux. Mana regen, AP and CDR.
Lich Bane. This item is not recommended for beginners. If you walk close enough for a basic attack in a team fight, you're screwed. This item requires proper positioning. Only for advanced Lux players.
Rabadon's Deathcap. What kind of AP carry doesn't have a deathcap?
Zhonya's Houglass. Loads of AP and quite a bit of armor. You won't be using the active much cuz you should be at the back, but in emergency situations this item is your good friend. (Prioritize this item if they have a Caitlyn or Karth in your enemy team)
Banshee's Veil. Lets you survive longer. It is very rare that you will be this late in a game. But if you are in this situation, then sell Doran's Ring and get Banshees.
OTHER ITEMS
Rod of Ages
The thing is Lux's scalings arent the best, and if you want damage, you need AP. FAST. Rod of Ages doesn't give that much AP, although the health is quite useful. I personally don't need that much HP as I'm never in a position where i take damage.
Archangel Staff
A viable choice. Gives you loads of AP. Too bad you don't have a spammable skill. Even for me, I take about 30 minutes to go up to 1000 mana, and I spammed the most I could. But Tear of The Goddess must be bought before boots if you want Archangels to be effective.
Rylai's Crystal Sceptor
A BS item on Lux. You don't need this slow. Your CC is already good enough.
Mejai's Soulstealer
Get it if you have 5 kills by 25. Remember to sell it if you're doing bad late game.
Deathfire Grasp
You will die if you get that close. So NO.
