Masters Lulu Guide to Climb in S13 (Updated for 13.10 and Onwards)

By TurtleEpic
About Me
(Guide is updated for 13.10 item changes and will be updated in future as well)

Hey guys, I'm Turtle. I've been masters for 2 seasons in a row now while playing at 300 ping on NA servers (due to being in India for the time being). I have also been a Lulu main for a year or two and have a very good understanding of her potential. I've been able to climb to masters consistently now due to having better macro knowledge and match ups understanding. I have also been rank 4 Lulu during season 11 in NA and have finally decided to make a guide to help others climb the ladder as well with this very easy to play champion because of his simple kit. He is one engage support everyone should know how to play.

I hope you find this helpful and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask in comments or come watch me stream and ask there and I will try my best to answer all questions.

Lulu Pros and Cons
Lulu is situationally a strong pick. Lulu's niche is very reliant on your auto attack adc - hyper carries - due to speed and attack speed or specific junglers that can abuse her movement speed buffs or mid laners that also have high dps due to attack speed.

You hard counter dive team comps as protect comps counters it. Your team can start dragons and barons with the lulu speed and shields, so the enemy team would need to initiate. She is weak against poke comps. If you do not have a suitable jungler or adc, then don't pick lulu.

With your E, you counter stealth champions really well as using your E on them reveals them.

Pros

- Strong early game
- Utility
- CCs on 3/4 skills
- Fits into almost any comp
- Amazing peel
- Engage/Disengage skills (with items as well)
- Great against assassins, anti-dive, and anti-stealth
- Short CD later into the game, scales well

Cons

- Relies on teammates
- Cannot start a fight by herself (opposite of engage supports finding picks alone)
- No sustain
- Decently high mana cost early in the game
- Squishy
Abilities
Passive - Pix, Faerie Companion

Pix fires a barrage of 3 bolts, dealing a total of 15-117 (at levels 1-18) (+15% of ability power), at whomever Lulu attacks.

These bolts are homing but can be blocked by other units.

Q - Glitterlance

Lulu and Pix Pix each fire a magic bolt towards the target point, each one dealing 70 / 105 / 140 / 175 / 210 (+40% of ability power) magic damage, reduced by 70% against minions for a total of 49 / 73.5 / 98 / 122.5 / 147 (+28% of ability power), and slowing them by 80%, decaying over 2 seconds.

If an enemy is damaged by both bolts, they take 25% bonus damage and the duration of the slow is refreshed.

W - Whimsy

On ally cast: Target ally gains 30% movement speed (+5% of ability power) and 25 / 27.5 / 30 / 32.5 / 35% bonus attack speed for 3 / 3.25 / 3.5 / 3.75 / 4 seconds.

On enemy cast: Polymorphs an enemy champion for 1.5 / 1.75 / 2 / 2.25 / 2.5 seconds, disabling their ability to attack or cast spells and reducing their base movement speed by 60.

E - Help, Pix!

On Ally Cast: Commands Pix to jump to an ally and then follow and aid their attacks instead of Lulu's for 6 seconds. If the target is an allied champion, Pix shields them from 80 / 120 / 160 / 200 / 240 (+60% of ability power) damage for 2.5 seconds.

On Enemy Cast: Pix deals 80 / 120 / 160 / 200 / 240 (+40% of ability power) magic damage to target enemy unit. Pix then follows and grants vision of them for 6 seconds.

R - Wild Growth

Lulu enlarges her ally, knocking nearby enemies into the air. For 7 seconds her ally gains 300 / 450 / 600 (+50% of ability power) bonus health and slows nearby enemies by 30 / 45 / 60% for .25 seconds. This slow duration is refreshed if enemies stay near Wild Growth's aura.
Spells
Flash is 100% always needed. It will help you get out of bad situations and also be able to set up more picks.

Ignite is more common to take because it allows you to play very aggressively and secure kills early which can help lead to snowballs.

Exhaust is taken when you don't think you have too much kill pressure in lane or if the enemy has some assassins that might need to be exhausted in teamfights.
Guardian vs Aery
When should you take Aery or Guardian?

Aery

Summon Aery is taken into match ups where you are able to trade freely against the enemies and are able to play the lane more aggressive. You can use this against melees and range champions, but the secondary runes will change accordingly. Check out the runes to know which to go in each scenario.

Guardian

Guardian is taken in losing lanes or lanes where you have to play extra safe. The rune tree will allow you to have tankier stats which will help with surviving the laning phase. The guardian shield will also be larger than aery which will help you survive engages or survive being ganked by the jungle.

Overall, if you do not know which rune to take, Summon Aery is always your standard option which you can take whenever and still be okay.
Laning Phase
Figure out priority targets to Polymorph/Knock up.
It will help you decide which abilities to use for which enemy abilities.

-Keep an eye out for channeled AOE abilities/ultimates
-Look at your botlane and the enemy botlane and see what the win conditions are for both sides.

Decide the proper support item for your lane.
Spellthief's Edge for when you can play aggressive. Relic Shield for hard matchups.

During the laning phase, Lulu has the option to play defensive or aggressive since her kit can be used in both ways. In winning match ups, you can be using your abilities on the enemies to get off good trades and keep the pressure in lane. In harder match ups, you want to be using your abilities to keep you and your adc alive. Once you understand this about the champion, your laning phase will become much easier to play.

As soon as you get to lane, you need to walk up and harass the enemy laner. It’s important that you hit level 2 before or at the same time as the enemy. You need to hit level 2 otherwise the enemy may look for an all in while you’re level 1, and hitting 2 will make it more difficult for the enemy to kill you.

The goal is to get Lulu out of the laning phase and into mid-late game where enchanters start to scale and actually become a lot more impactful.
Teamfights
In the Mid game, your goal is to move around the map and match the enemy, keep your allies alive and provide heals and shields to your teammates. As Lulu is an utility support, you need to be with your carries at all times. You should never leave them alone, nor should you be alone during the mid-game unless you are making your way to your team.

Your job is to have vision around objectives so you are able to see the enemies from any of the possible angles so there is no sudden threat. Make sure to pay attention to who your main carry (or carries) are and try to stick near them. You want to keep these champions alive at all costs if you want to win the fights. While you are playing for your team, you also want to make sure to recognize who the main threats are on the enemy team so you can cc them and not let them do their job.

Understanding win cons for both teams is how you will excel on Lulu because then you will know who will help you carry and who on the enemy team can stop you from winning. You want to enable your teammates while disabling the enemies.
Tips and Tricks
- Glitterlance can be fired at odd angles depending on where your cursor is

- Consider casting Help, Pix! on ranged attackers for the Pix boost and Wild Growth on Tanks or Fighters for the added initiation power.

- The shots from Lulu's faerie can be intercepted; hide behind your minions to avoid the additional Faerie attacks.

- Lulu excels when opponents heavily commit.

- Lulu's kit makes her available to be a top, mid laner or support role.

- Cast Help, Pix! on ranged minions before Glitterlance to perform a long distance poke.

- Her passive is useful when you decide to poke enemies and push the lane attacking minions. If you have 2 minions in a row and you attack the farthest one from you, Pix will attack the nearest one (so you deal damage to two minions instead of one)
Conclusion
I hope this guide helps you learn Lulu easier and really makes you feel like adding this champion to your champion pool. A very exciting champion, with an annoying vibe for enemies while you enjoy yourself.

I will be keeping this guide updated as any buffs/nerfs happen to her, or if there are any changes in the meta.

I will also credit Riot Games for the section of the lore about Lulu as I have not written that and am only adding it here for others to read if they want.

Lulu Lore? Pog?
Lulu was always a caring and deeply empathetic yordle, who lived as much in her whimsical daydreams as in reality. One day, while wandering the material realm, she came upon what appeared to be a bird with a broken wing. She ran to help, at which point the bird turned into a tiny, mischievous Pix, Faerie Companion fae spirit. Before she could react, the faerie grabbed her walking stick and took off. Giggling, Lulu gave chase.

The spirit led her far into the forest. They went over boulders, under logs, and around ancient, overgrown stone circles. The faerie darted into a cave hidden behind a waterfall, and Lulu went after it. It flittered ahead, always just out of reach.

Down and down and down they went. Lulu tumbled and scrambled around twisted roots and glowing mushrooms, and at some point they crossed over into the spirit realm without her realizing it. Their surroundings became progressively stranger and more disorienting; up became down, forward became backward, big became small.

Finally, after what seemed forever, Lulu caught up with the faerie, whose name, she discovered, was Pix.

With a click of his tiny fingers, Pix turned her humble walking stick into a spiraling staff, and tossed it back to her. It sprouted leaves and flowers, making Lulu gasp in delight. So began their forever-friendship, built of mischief, fun, and love of nature.

Pix had led her to the Glade.

Bandle City, Lulu’s home, was a bizarre and magical place that defied logic, where time was meaningless and the natural laws of the material realm did not wholly apply. And yet the Glade was a place stranger still—it existed long before yordles came into the world, and it was perhaps from the Glade that Bandle City itself sprung. A place of raw primordial magic, it was hidden away so deeply that no yordle had ever found it… until now.

Here, Lulu’s own magic became wildly magnified. Laughing joyfully, she discovered she could reshape her surroundings at will, as well as alter her form to whatever she wanted. Everything and anything from her overactive imagination came to life.

Lulu didn’t know if Pix had brought her here because he saw in her a kindred soul and simply wanted someone to play with, or if the Glade needed her for some other purpose—but she fell in love with it instantly. Her life became one of endless creation and play, and she soon forgot anything else existed.

When finally she remembered, it was like waking from a dream.

She found herself back in the material realm, not knowing if a single day had passed, or a thousand years. To her surprise and joy, she found that some of her newfound power had come with her, allowing her to make small things large, change colors to those more pleasing to her, and cause creatures to fall spontaneously asleep. To Pix’s endless amusement, she Whimsy turned the mightiest beasts into tiny, bewildered frogs or squirrels with a flick of her staff.

Nevertheless, she began to miss the Glade. She decided to go back, but realized she didn’t remember the way. Pix was no help, claiming to have forgotten as well, though it was possible he just didn’t want to return quite yet.

Unperturbed, Lulu set out anyway. She was certain the route back to the Glade was always shifting, making one way as good as another. She simply picked whatever direction took her fancy at any particular moment, and even threw herself into seemingly terrible danger whenever it looked fun. Her travels took her far and wide, and magic, mayhem, and mishap tended to follow wherever she went.

In Demacia, she freed a group of children from their boring history lessons, and led them off into a nearby meadow. Her game resulted in them being turned into toadstools for a full turn of the moon, while their desperate parents and the local militia searched for them in vain. It wasn’t quite what Lulu had intended, but fun nonetheless. When the children finally returned home and told everyone what had happened, no one believed them.

In the borderlands of the Freljord, Lulu thought it would be hilarious to change the weapons of two rival tribes into flowers just as they clashed, which resulted in absolute chaos and confusion. More recently, she has found herself happily lost in Ionia, playing in the glowing everblooms of Qaelin, and playing pranks on bewildered acolytes of the Order of Shadow, who she thinks are far too serious for their own good.

While Lulu seeks to return to the Glade, and misses it, she is happy, for every day brings more opportunity for adventure and fun.

And besides, she has come to realize that she carries a part of the Glade in her heart, wherever she goes.

"The best path between two points is upside-down, between, then inside-out and round again."
