Introduction
Anyway, here we go...
I use the 9/0/21 masteries because the utility masteres really help you stay inside your lane with the extra gold in the beginning, and the mana regen.
Because of maokai's box skill sap magic
in addition to the regrowth pendant
, you have pretty good sustain early game. Late game, you will build magic resist and armor, so I dont think the defense masteries is really needed.

Alright, so this is what you're going to do to burst them.

Alright, so I start out with a regrowth pendant
because it builds into the philosophers stone
, which will give you some nice health and mana regen so you can stay in your lane longer.
For the first recall to buy, I save enough to finish the philosophers stone
, boots
, a ward
, potions as needed
, a heart of gold
, and a sapphire crystal
.
(if you are recalling because you are getting harassed a lot, rush the philosophers stone
, boots
, and heart of gold
)
Next recall, will be to get the sheen
, merc treads
, and negatron cloak
.
AFTER THIS, you need to use your own judgement to see what you need to build first.
If you want a balanced item, get the triforce
armor, randuins
tanky AP item, the rod of ages
magic resist AP item, abyssal scepter
If you feel they are always just out of snare range, shurelyas
Another couple of items that is worth building:
for an AD heavy team, frozen heart
,
if the opposing team has a lot of CC's, banshees veil
for more tankiness, a sunfire cape
But ALWAYS get the triforce
, and rod of ages
.

Alright I like to get flash
, and exhaust
, and here is why:
Normallly, the person that you are going to try to snare is either the ranged AD carry, or the AP carry. So to shut them down completely, you are going to snare them
, exhaust
, and do your combo, and if you're in a team fight, and your team cannot kill the person you snared, then your team sucks.
Flash
is for that extra range so you can flash
, then snare
.
Flash
is also a handy way to escape ganks. Learn where you can flash
over walls, and run away.

Alright, so there is my build for maokai. I like to build him as an AP offtank and keep it balanced between magic resist and armor, depending on the opposing team. But yeah, this is only for reference, I don't expect people to follow this build completely, try out wacky builds.
Remember, its just a game.
