Choose Champion Build:

  • LoL Champion: Nocturne
  • LoL Champion: Nocturne

Introduction

So let's get down to business. What this guide is doing is going to tell you how to play a jungle Nocturne, and how to play a jungle Nocturne well. As a new player I was constantly looking for good Nocturne builds and guides, having the strangest obsession with him, wanting to get good with him. If you have the same desire to get good with this specific champion as -I- did, feel free to read on. If not, I don't know why you opened this guide in the first place.

Something you should know about Nocturne, is that he is more or less an auto-attack champion.

Abilities

Nocturne has 3 offensive abilities.

Duskbringer - This is your main offensive ability. This is your Scindo Tractus. This is, most importantly, your free B.F. Sword, and more. You can use it to dish out massive damage to an enemy champion. This can close the distance between you and a champion, albeit not quite as well with your ultimate. To a less good extent, it can also be used to escape from a pursuing champion.

Shroud of Darkness - ... A free Banshee's Veil. If that's not good enough - passive attack speed. Combined with a sharp mind and quick reflexxes, this will be a very useful asset to you.

Unspeakable Horror - It's just what it says. Your enemy says it and they see that fear coming, they know death is approaching. I don't really have anything else to say on this.

Paranoia - Riot says it has more than one use but you and I both know that's a load of ********. It's main purpose is to get to your enemy, deal some damage and secure a gank. The second that screen turns into a hue of a different color be ready to mash that ****ing mouse to get to your enemy, because if you don't the enemy will know you're coming for them and regress to their turret.

Ability Usage:

You want to use all of these abilities in a way that can either help you get out as much damage as you can for a gank and secure a kill, or to help you escape certain death. The thing about Nocturne is his abilities have both defensive and offensive uses; With the exception of Paranoia, obviously.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:

-Nocturne has insane damage output from early-game to end-game.
-Nocturne is able to use his abilities in an offensive and defensive manner.
-Very good at closing and gaining distances.
-Can be tanky and has alot of damage output simultaneously. Atmog's for the win, anyone? ...Anyone?
-DAT FEAR.
-Can legitimately scare the **** out of an unsuspecting opponent. SEIZURES, ANYONE?

Cons:

-Early game, can be quite squishy.
-Very mana-dependent.
-Needs alot of timing with a good few of his abilities, as well as precision.

Rune choice:

It's a matter of your playstyle, but I'll show you my rune choice and why I prefer them.

Marks of Desolation: I choose these because they offer alot of armor penetration. A Nocturne with alot of armor penetration can be scary.

Seal of Strength: Obviously, attack damage combined with armor penetration works well together. If he has a nice amount of early attack damage it not only helps ganking but his jungling.

Glyphs of Cooldown Reduction: Eh, this, I don't really know! I guess this one is just a personal matter of preference; It does help Paranoia cool down abit faster, and goes with pretty much any other Melee DPS.

Quintessence of Desolation: Problem, tank?
Quintessence of Fortitude: For the tanky build, well... obviously, you're going to want this. Do I really need to say more?

Masteries:

The mastery choice is pretty straight-forward. It's revolved around dealing alot more damage, and hitting faster. ALso a nice bonus was thrown in there for smite and monster buffs.

Items:

Initial gold item choice: Cloth armor and health potions. You want to get two health potions and a ward. Obviously a ward so you don't get ganked, it's pretty common as a jungler in level 30 matches. Health potions so you can kill the Ancient Golem. Even with all of this, you're GOING to need a leash. No way around it.

Wriggle's: Obviously, it's very versatile.

Mercury treads: You can get this or ninja tabi, because it offers a bit of survivability.

Bloodthirster: Nocturne's best friend. You want to rush this and max it for optimal ganking.

Trinity Force: GOD YES, PLEASE GOD YES. This is everything you want: Powerful attacks, survivability, movement speed.

Infinity Edge: ^

Banshee's Veil: A second W. No additional cost. If a game even lasts this long, go for it!

Jungle Tanky:

Atmog's: While remaining tanky it offers damage up the wazoo.

Frozen Mallet: A tanky item that only offers 20 damage, but gives a slow and adds onto Atma's Impaler.

Bloodthirster: You obviously want a base source of attack edamage. You can get this or Infinity Edge.

Skill Sequence

Duskbringer will be a free B.F.Sword. You want to use it whenever possible, and henceforth you want to max it out. It's what makes you stronger than any other AD champion in terms of attack damage.

Shroud of Darkness: This is more or less maxxed before your fear because the fear being maxxed first only offers another second or so of fear length. In comparison to the attack speed you get from the passive from this, shroud of darkness is much better.

Unspeakable Horror: The only real good thing about this is the fear. Occasionally, it can get you a kill but the length on it is just stupid and paranoia can be used as a much better way of killing a champion with low health.

Summoner Spells

You want to get smite as one of your summoner spells, without a doubt. The reason being, you're a jungler; Smite is what makes you a jungler.

Flash is also great. It can help with ganks, going in for a kill when an enemy champion is almost dead and escaping, using it to initiate the gank, and so many countless other uses for it!

As an alternative you can get ghost for your second summoner spell. Ghost can be almost as reliable as flash, if not better. I think this is just a personal preference when choosing between summoner spells.

Summary

So this is my first MOBAfire guide. My intent was to help those players who struggle with this specific champion get better with him. I know personally how frustrating it can be to get called a feeder, a noob, a failure... all that other annoying ****. Nocturne is a great champion overall; His jungling skills are as good as Lee Sin's and Udyr's both.

Here's to hoping I helped a potential great Nocturne player!
