Bard outdamages you early with his meeps and the fact he often takes electrocute. I often take resolve second vs Bard because boneplating can completely mitigate the meet damage. Just don't get stunned and try not to trade with meeps and you'll outscale.
Thresh
Thresh is one of Sona's worst matchups. He has high base damage early with his e passive on hit, and has multiple forms of cc that can be chained together easily. Once caught, something will soon be taken, whether it be summoner spells or life. Play outside his flay range, back off if he walks forward aggressively, abuse your max range Q's, and use minions to avoid his hook.
Zyra
High base damage, minion piercing snare that scales with rank, and low skill floor make this champion hard to deal with. However, your aery + w shield counters her plant's dot pretty well, and as long as you play around her skill CD's, this matchup is manageable.
Lux
Pretty simple matchup. If you don't get rooted. You win. Lux no longer buys damage items early, and instead buys Athenes unholy grail. This means that you get a free lane to scale provided you don't get burst. Going for poke on Lux w cooldown is recommended.
Braum
Braum is one of Sona's easiest matchups. If you don't get hit by his Q, you have free reign over lane, and can abuse him as much as you desire. Don't ult when his e is up, and be away that he can do to minions before ulting to engage quickly.
Alistar
After level 2, you can no longer walk up beyond your casters. Alistar will flash trample you and knock you into the enemy ADC, youe life will flash before your eyes over and over again. He's difficult to poke out due to his passive, and natural tankiness. His engage combo is point and click, and avoidable only by flash or zhonyas. His ultimate cleanses your ultimate, and he can dive extremely well. Your only chance in this lane is to abuse him level one with chords and autos, and getting level two before them to create health advantages.
Blitzcrank
A strong engage support, Blitzcrank has haunted the nightmares of many with his long range hooks. If you play behind minions, and abuse your e chord if he attempts to use the zero counterplay strat of running up to you with w, e auto into hook. His hook CD is 12 seconds early, you must abuse that if you're to win this matchup. His ultimate can cancel shields, but that's not as relevant to Sona considering her shields are low cooldown naturally.
Brand
You cannot trade ability for ability with Brand. His base damages are too high, and if he procs passive, you can no longer play aggressively. Taking Mr shard is highly recommended, and crucible rush is effective versus him. If he has blaze on you, stay behind minions to avoid the stun. If you get stunned after level 3, you will no longer be able to play the lane. Brand can also buy Morello liandries, which is extremely cancer to play against as any enchanter: 5 seconds of grevious wounds.
Fiddlesticks
He can't poke you out, you can't poke him out. His only threat is engage with ultimate. Vision control is top priority versus Fiddle. Mercury treads and Mikael for his fear is highly recommended.
Janna
She outtrades you early until your level 4. After you put 2 points in w, Janna isn't a threat, barring your own mistakes. Avoid her tornadoes, you can usually guess where they'll go and walk vertically to avoid them, don't try to outrun them. Be aware of Janna's ultimate.
Leona
Leona is dangerous, but like most melee engage matchups, she has an extremely vulnerable level one. Walk into lane with chord ready, and abuse her last hits for relic shield. Create health advantages and push to level 2 first. Be aware of how close she is to level 2, and back off accordingly. Play around her e range pre 6, and abuse your large q range. After 6, be sjre not to overextend, lr be ready to expend flash.
Morgana
Sona has a really good matchup into Morgana because Sona can burst Morgana blackshield very easily. Blackshield has a very large cooldown, and you should always be aware of it. If you want to engsge on a Morg with her blackshield, I would recommend flash and then q power chord her to attempt to fake her out, and then ult.
Nami
You can't really outsustain her, but she can't kill you unless she hits bubble. Nami's real danger comes from her utility to her ADC, empowering their autos to slow and allow them to run you down. After 6, maintaining vision on Nami is important to avoid ambushes with wave into bubble. Nami wants to auto w and trade with the heal from the return bounce from w. Simply walk backwards when she w, and return damage as best you can. You outscale her hard.
Nautilus
Nautilus is extremely tanky, has high base damage on abilities, and 4 forms of cc to lock you down. Play behind minions, and beware his flash auto range. I recommend taking free stopwatch for his ultimate, and not to overextend past level 6.
Pyke
Pyke is the only support that builds lethality. He is everything Sona doesn't want. He cannot be poked out due to passive, he has multiple forms of cc, he does plenty of burst damage on his own, his ultimate is a true damage execute, he roams early with high success, and he creates large gold leads and allows comebacks to happen. I personally permaban Pyke, but playing against him, i would keep vision control on the side bushes to delay his recovery from passive, and focus my poke on their ADC. Taking ignite allows you to potentially burst Pyke, as he shares this weakness with you.
Rakan
Rakan has a strong all in with his w, but otherwise is a sitting duck. Beware the Xayah Rakan duo, and be respectful with your flash. Rakan can also engage from behind his ADC with R,E into W. Create health advantages around his w CD
Shen
Shen is a fairly simple engage matchup. His dash is fairly telegraphed, his w isn't really effective against you, and barring e flash, you should have free rein over this lane. However if he does get onto you, he will cut you up. He has a surprising amount of damage early with his empowered autos.
Sona
We all love mirror matchups don't we? Against another Sona, it all depends on positioning, build and skill order. The early game is extremely important. I recommend putting an extra point in w early, and then you can slap each other with wet noodles all laning phase, but you win the sustain war slightly.
Soraka
Soraka wins all sustain wars. You can't poke her out, you can't outsustain her, this is a farm until 6 matchup. Landing a double crescendo and igniting Soraka early is the way to go.
Taric
Taric is a free lane for Sona. But it's also a free lane for Taric as well. You get to farm spellthief freely, but you won't be able to kill him. Taric is the only other support who scales as hard as Sona, but his utility is burst centered, and you will win longer fights. Taric's engage is extremely simple: walking up with Dazzle, and flashing. E chording him is a pretty good solution, and walking away. Be aware of his flash cooldown and you shouldn't ever get caught by him.
Vel'Koz
Most of Velkoz' damage is in his Q, his passive, and his ultimate. Learning how to avoid his Q is up to experience, I recommend walking forward in a diagonal fashion, and swapping directions. If he lands Q, he has an easier time of landing his e, knockup, and will consistently proc passive by doing so. Don't get hit by Q. His ultimate is fairly long range, but it is a channel that can be interrupted by trading your ultimate.
Yuumi
Yuumi is actually fairly similar to Velkoz in how much experience you need to dodge her skillshot. You outsustain Yuumi until her athenes, and you can trade ability for ability positively. Beware of her slow into ultimate.
Jhin
Jhin can snare off of your Q, making Sona Jhin a constant kill lane.
Varus
Varus ultimate + Sona ultimate= Death. God I love math.
Sivir
Sivir waveclears fast, has high base damage abilities and scales well into late game. Best ADC for Sona
Draven
Q gives Draven an on hit bonus to his already bonkers auto attacks. Strong kill lane, and Sona will provide consistent utility to Draven throughout the game.

Ashe
Your poke combined is very strong, and your ultimates can layer cc pretty easily. Buying an ardent censer for Ashe is recommended because she utilizes attack speed well, and ardent procs on-hit with runaans hurricane. Keep in mind that you're both very vulnerable to hard engage.
Caitlyn
You accentuate Caitlyn's harass very well, and e chord is your best friend here. The more you allow Caitlyn to harass, the easier your lane will be.
Ezreal
Ezreal is a mid game champion that spikes at two items. He needs sheen to be relevant in lane, and until that point is very weak. This, paired with Sona's already mediocre laning phase, means that with an Ezreal as your ADC, you do not get to play the game. Please do not pick Ezreal with Sona or vice versa.
Corki
Corki is also mediocre in lane until his sheen, and functions similarly to Ezreal. The main difference is that Corki scales far better than Ezreal, and has more mobility/carry potential. Corki is also more of an ad caster early on, and doesn't utilize ardent as effectively.
Jinx
Jinx is an insane late game carry, and as such her laning phase can be a little lacking. Just do your best to allow her safe farming, and you can fight when she has infinity edge. Try to take extended fights when possible, playing around her lethal tempo.
Kai'Sa
Kai'Sa is currently the best ADC in the game, and Sona allows her to make picks/survive longer in a teamfight. Kai'Sa utilizes ardent very well, and benefits from Q's on hit portion.

Hi! I'm Sona Aria. At the time of writing this, I'm currently Plat 4 with a 54% winrate (63% Sona winrate out of 112 games). I have 800k cumulative mastery on Sona, with over 850+ games played of her since I started Feb 2018. Please, please read the notes, they include build reasonings, rune details, matchup details, and being honest I've already spent 6 hours on this. This is still a WIP, I will finish up ADC synergies soon. I will also keep this up to date as patches go by, so feel free to visit again if you need.
