Introduction
You're going to need to max out your Vorpal Strike. This way you can do a lot of damage and it will help with your last hits. Max out your taunt second and get the occasional Feint for sustainability. A longer taunt means more time for your team to focus them down and damage. Feint is still good, but not needed as much when you use this build because of your high armour and health.
When you play Shen, you're going to need to last hit in order to keep up your gold. Using your Q (vorpal blade) to last hit is what is recommended, but if the target is on too higher health you use your Q and then you hit with a Ki Strike (passive). Shen can dish out a lot of damage, but you need to use that to your advantage with the right timing.
When you first start the game, don't be scared to get agressive and smack the opposing team around a little. If you get a Doran's Shield first this will regenerate your health and also give you the bonuses of armour and health. Rush a heart of gold for the extra gold, then build a Ninja Tabi or Merc Treads depending on the situation, Aegis of Legion next. Next you're going to build a Randuins Omen, Force of Nature and a Sunfire Cape. If the game lasts any longer, sell the Doran's shield and get a Frozen Mallet.
If you're in range of a turret and it's focusing on you, before it hits you press W (feint) and block some of the damage. Hitting targets while the Vorpal Blade effect is on them will cause you and your team to get health back. Someone taunted by Rammus? Hit him with a Q and the person being taunted will get health back. Low health? Slap them with a Q and then whack them to get your health back up. Your Ki Strike can do a tonne of damage, but you need to use it at the right moment.
