Introduction
Ok, for runes, I like to choose...
Greater Mark of Warding: Magic resistance is always good to have when tanking as it means you take less damage from magic.
Greater Seal of Resilience: Again you're tanking need some damage mitigation here.
Greater Glyph of Warding: Because it's better than the marks, but you still want both so you have some pretty decent MR.
Greater Quintessence of Evasion: Additional Dodge chance is nice for damage mitigation as well as being talented to give you inrcreased run speed in case you need to run away or chase. Chasing in most cases is usually bad.

Mastery setup is purely for the most Damage mitigation and less time dead... for that rare chance you'll die.
Offense Tree: Only taking cripple from here. increases the duration by an extra half a second which could literally save your life, but also it reduces enemy defense abilities making them easier to kill for your team.
Defense Tree: Choosing the talents that would most benefit a Shen who would like to avoid damage and since he doesn't have mana, no point in getting the regen talent there. alternatively you could get Ardor, but it will likely be ineffective without ability power or some form of damage that would make the attack speed useful. I do have an idea I'm going to try that uses that.
Utility Tree: exp gain to level faster, and less time spent dead. Also improved ghost to be able to chase or run away faster.

Time for the Items.
You'll want to buy your Heart of Gold first, it's a prerequisite for Randuin's Omen, and it also gives you gold per 10. as a tank your items will not cost as much as an AP/AD champ, so let them get last hits on minions.
I like to get Boots of Swiftness. They are great for Shen as he has a low base movement speed, and it will also make chasing and running away easier.
Should probably buy thornmail next so you have that extra defense and offense (kinda).
Aegis of the Legion would be the next item for me. This is about the time laning phase is over and when you'll need a little magic resist
2nd part of randuins omen comes next with Warden's Mail, nice amount of HP5, and that chance on slowing enemy attack speed.
Guardian Angel now for the little bit of extra magic resist you should have enough armor for the armor part of this item to not really matter by now, but the revive is nice in a bad situation.
Here's where you finish up Randuins Omen.
If the game lasts this long, then you'll want to pick up a force of nature now if they have some heavy magic damage. If not then you're gonna want to pick up the Madred's Bloodrazor. Because if you can buy that then team fights are usually stalemates at this point and the damage would be nice as well as MBR being a little tanky.

Start with Vorpal blade, but max this talent 2nd. it's only there to gain hp in the laning phase and helps you show your teammate who to focus should you guys get in a fight.
Feint will be your next move so that way you can block their little tiny bits of harrasment, but you will be maxing this talent first so that way you can make opponents focus you and then block some of that damage.
Shadow Dash next, but max last, you'll only ever get to use this once per fight if either team is good, anyone it passes through will be taunted and now you can make use of that skill Feint, as now the enemy will be attacking you.
Stand United, The last ability and greatest one. you give yourself and an ally a shield that absorbs a decent amount of damage and then you teleport to their location to step in and mess up your opponents plan at killing the squishy you just saved.

I prefer to use Ghost and Exhaust. I've explained why earlier in this guide, but there are alternatives to those.
you could choose to take clairvoyance for the nice little range of view in case you suspect gank, or would just like to know what's around the corner.
maybe go with cleanse in case your opponents have a decent amount of CC.
Another choice you could go with would be Rally, no one ever uses it and most likely no one will pay attention to the standard, but it's great for a team fight or push on a tower. just make sure you put it out of tower range, for some reason every time I've used it, the tower shot it down first.
Lastly if you would like to move around really quick in this game, get teleport.

Shen is a great team player. He has alot to bring to the table and alot to take from opponents tables. Map awareness is key for someone such as shen, you need to watch out for incoming ganks, troublesome situations and your teammates that overextend and need to be saved via Stand United.
Shen actually works best when laning with your carry. make sure you feed him nice and fat so that way you guys ensure victory, and quickly as well.
