Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
Kennen is a hugely under appreciated champion, who gets little respect from people creating "tiers" and playing in match play. The truth is, many people don't really know how to play Kennen, but I do and I will teach you how.
Kennen's abilities give him the potential to fill several roles, but I will focus on the ones that I use most often. These are: ganker and team killer. Especially in the early game, Kennen's ability to quickly stun opponents can combined with his high damage output (and if necessary, quick escape potential via lightning rush) to take down opponents fast. Likewise in team fights, Kennen has the potential for massive damage output, not to mention stuns. Some think of Kennen more as a support hero, focusing mostly on his ability to stun. While this is very important (especially in team fights), don't underestimate his potential and very rapid damage output. Also, due to my choice of mastery points, Doran's shield, Abyssal sceptor, and flat health quintessence, I've made Kennen durable enough to usually get out of fights without getting demolished. Survivability and a high K/D ratio is key to getting the items he needs.
Magic Penetration and Ability Power
I've read a few guides which put Kennen as an AD champion. Frankly, this is stupid, as his only standard damage attack IS his standard attack. Kennen really shines with maxed out magic penetration (see my items and runes) early, and AP late. I always go for haunting guise and sorc boots first, to max out my magic pen. Those items are far cheaper, even when combined, than purchasing one higher tier AP item such as Rylai's. Just remember, magic penetration and magic resist debuff (from abyssal sceptor) can actually give opponents negative magic resist, further increasing damage.
Initiating a gank or team fight with lightning rush, quickly followed by lightning surge, not only does good damage but puts 2 marks of the storm on enemies. Hitting his ulti not only does massive AoE damage (to one target at a time unfortunately), but also will add a 3rd Mark of the Storm, stunning the opponent - that is, if they aren't already dead. I pick exhaust and ignite in case they AREN'T dead, and also to help with early game ganks. Kennen has the ability to take over a game, especially in team fights. His potential for massive team AoE or Individual damage, combined with survivability and easy stuns make him very powerful. The little ninja should not be underestimated, and especially not while in the hands of a skilled user. I recommend him strongly.
