Champion Build Guide

Vayne Mid | "The dark should fear me"

By Grayified
Why Vayne Mid?
Why would you want to play Vayne in the mid lane, rather than ADC or top like most players do?

Top is too vulnerable to ganks, and both ADC and top are less influential roles coimpared to Mid.

As mid, you can win lane, and then start roaming, winning the game for your team rather than being stuck in a lane, unable to affect the map.

With this build, you also press the opponent from level 1, making it easier for your jungler to make plays.

As mid, you can snowball in the early game by taking every early fight you possibly can, from small skirmishes in the river to full fights in another lane.

You might expect a Vayne mid to be farming, waiting for 3 items and scaling, then starting to carry, but with this build the playstyle is completely different, not even needing levels or items to win games.
Vayne's Secret Weapon
Vayne Mid's secret weapon is Cleanse. Against an enemy mid with CC or a team full of it, you'll need to take this every time. Cleanse is vital on Vayne mid, as you are going to get cc'd, due to you being the priority target and Cleanse lets you fix this and lets you turn it into an opportunity for a kill. It's also a great counter for Ignite, removing it instantly, which is much better than bringing Heal as a counter for Ignite, as Grievous Wounds will affect how much you're healed by.

And, if you see a Vayne mid with Cleanse, I don't know about you, but as a jungler, I'm not ganking that guy. Having Cleanse as a spell is almost like having a gank avoider spell. Why would any jungler gank that lane that has a 210 second cooldown spell that makes your CC useless? You could literally play against a Twisted Fate, a targeted CC that normally guarantees a free kill in a gank, and the enemy jungler will just end up ignoring his lane because you won't be getting CC'd.

The only time you'd bring Ignite over Cleanse is if the enemy mid laner has no CC and the rest of the enemy comp has very very little CC.
Laning: Level 1
At level 1, you start Q, and look for an agressive flank, going through the river and around the wall, showing up just in front of the enemy turret, cutting off their escape and going for an aggressive trade. There is no possible way for you to be outtraded, as you have Press the Attack for damage and your Q to dodge any abilites. No mage has the damage or cooldowns at level 1 to even take this trade, and no melee laner can get in range to take the trade, so this gives you full wave control.
Laning: Level 2
At level 2, you take your W, and you'll be pushing your wave to ensure you get level 2 first, always. Your range advantage guarantees it, and you can even also solo down a ranged minion to ensure that your wave will always push in at level 2. You will continue to harass, poking the enemy down and hitting every single cs, as Vayne is quite easy to cs with.
Laning: Level 3
At level 3, you take your E, and if you've poked the enemy down enough, you can kill here with a 3x auto combo into a condemn to finish them off, otherwise you continue farming, using E to dodge ganks, and using that E to avoid and cancel any CC immediately.
Laning: First Base
A great first base for Vayne is Vampiric Scepter. It lets you get progress into your first item, Immortal Shieldbow (which we will talk more about later), and it means you will always have a health advantage in lane, letting you poke for free, then sustain it back, while enemies may have to base or risk dying.

You can also buy Berserker's Greaves for more mobility, as well as it also allowing you to ream more.
Level 6: The roaming begins
At level 6 you can really begin your full gameplan. You by now have gotten an advantage in lane, and you should now be able to either 1v1 the enemy if they walk too far up, or begin your roaming. You should shove in your wave, forcing the enemy to pick it up at tower, and then you move to start a roam. If it looks like it's going to be a good play after starting to move, you commit to it, otherwise you go back, shove in another wave, then try again.

You need to play Vayne like a roaming mid, using your level 6 power spike to win fights and outplay. If you're just sitting mid vs a mage, it means you're just trading farm with them and you're not affecting the game enough.

You need to be happy to join any fight, you can ditch your wave and leave it wherever it is to run over and go for kills.

Your ult gives you the power of 3.5 extra long swords at level 6, so an effective lead of ~1250 gold, which is really ridiculous when you think about it. That is the same as having over three kills worth of gold, which instantly activates when you press R, meaning you don't even have to base to buy the items to gain this massive lead. When you cast R, you have 8 seconds to win the fight before it runs out, so you want to use it as soon as possible to start DPSing. As long as you're not tanking a bunch of damage and getting one shot, you should be able to win every fight with this absurd amount of damage. Your E is also a vital ability in any early skirmishes, as with any CC. If you land a wall stun on an enemy, it wins the fight.
Why shieldbow?
Okay, but why are you always going to rush Immortal Shieldbow? Kraken Slayer should always be the buy on Vayne, with it's super high damage? But with Vayne mid, you need to value the shield and lifesteal more. Immortal Shieldbow is incredible at keeping Vayne alive in early fights, and many of the risks you take with this build e.g. roaming and early fights are won because of this item. Kraken Slayer overall does higher damage, but Immortal Shieldbow guarantees that you can contribute to early teamfights without being too squishy and always being on full health at the start.
Mid Game
In mid game - you are a Vayne. A mobile ADC with lots of outplay potential. So of course, this means that it is your job to move to a sidelane, and let your immobile, weak ADC take mid. You need to look to pick up waves and make sure your team is missing 0 gold or XP. You can extend and look for fights as well, with Vayne always having the option to look for a 1v1 or a 1v2 fight.

Your responsibility is to keep farming up, keep side lane pressure and then move to your team when there is a point to pressure, such as a mid tower, a dragon, or a fight that is about to happen and you need to get there to join it.

Oh, and as for ADC 1v1s, Vayne can already 1v1 any ADC by utilising her stealth, so now you have a level lead as well as an item lead over them too for free kills.
Teamfights
In teamfights, your job is the same as a normal ADC, with 1 difference. Less pressure. Vayne is usually the one single point of focus for the enemy team in a fight, because she's the highest damage. And now - you have 2 ADCs, so there are 2 options for enemies to split up and kill. This, along with Vayne ult invisibility creates an overwhelming amount of unstoppable damage coming out of your team. If they dive you, you can just juke away, DPSing and still win a fight. If they dive your ADC, then you are free to provide maximum DPS and win a fight solo. Your ADC won't love it, but you will be having a great time.
Late Game
Late game, everyone knows Vayne is a monster of a champion - this build is no exception. One factor when playing Vayne mid is your ability to do a baron at any point. Usually Vayne is one of the best baron takers, and now you have 2 ADCs on your team. Even at 20 minutes, the enemies need to be scared of it happening, and it just gets faster and faster throughout the game. That means in the late game, if you see a single enemy out of position, that's a free baron for your team. At this point, Vayne has the ability to win any fight from this point on. Even against tanks, Vayne is known to be the tank shredder. With 14% bonus true damage on her W, meaning 14% of the enemy's maximum health converted to damage each 3rd auto attack.
