Introduction

I've been playing for a while now, and I want to share how I think is the best ranged burst in the game. The trick to learning Veigar is not timing on his combo, but to know where your place is on the battlefield, and to always keep a keen eye out for a champion or two that has been slacking off on their MR. Veigar is one of those rare nukes that can down any select carry in one burst, which makes him a very good

Pros / Cons

Pros
[*] Amazing burst combo
[*] Great at creating or escaping ganks
[*] By end game, the enemy team will fear you if you play your cards right
[*] Primordial Burst is one of the best AP busters in the game (Beware the purple yordle, kat)

Cons
[*] Very Squishy
[*] Weak agaisnt blinks/gap closers

Runes

Personally, I think mpen is better than AP for the following reason: think of mpen as a percentage multiplier of your damage (Since you are piercing their MR, which takes a percentage out of the damage you do) vs. just 40 more AP. Of course, I did add some flat AP runes just for early game, and some scaling mana runes, because 180 extra mana late game is a deal.

Masteries

Honestly, if you can't figure out why I picked the masteries the way I did, don't even bother playing Veigar.

Items

I usually just pick up a and a to begin with just to help me farm early game. As soon as I have 330 gold, I port back to base and grab Kage's Lucky Pick. Kage's will help me build quicker using the GP10 bonus, which is basicly the most important item in the whole build. Sorc's is a no-brainer. Deathfire grasp is one of the most important items you can get for Veigar. It's a great initiating spell, as it does total damage, and can send a tank into full retreat. On top of that, it's cooldown mirrors Veigar's ult pretty well. The extra CDR and AP aren't bad either, and they help give all of Veigar's spells a little extra potential (That CDR helps a lot with the already quick CD of Baleful Strike, and can shave off a couple seconds to your ult). After you get , it will be about mid-game and you will start to get easy kills/assists, so grab a Deathcap. By the beginning of end game, you should at least have the part of Rabadon's Deathcap. Deathcap is a huge help to Veigar, and it is one of your main priorities. Abyssal Staff is a nice addition, as it gives Veigar a bit more survivability and gives his a little kick. I just threw in Void Staff because a VS is always a great idea, no matter who you are. It helps a lot agaisnt those pesky offtank AP's when you're ulting them.

More calculations :D
Say you see a Cho, and he has 300 AP, and 120 MR. With your ult up, it will do 400 damage plus 100% of his AP. That should be 700 damage, right? Well, no, because of MR. Usually without a VS, Veigar would have 20 MrP, thanks to Sorc's. So that means you do 580 damage, from the 700 you were about to do. Lame, right? Well, thanks to VS, you don't have to worry about that. With 40% MrP, 40% of that 120 MR is gone. Add in the 20 from Sorc's and you will do 580 damage. BUT WAIT! VS has an AP boost too! +70 Damage, and that means you are doing 650 damage instead of 540, even counting in MR. Cool, right?

Skill Sequence

My general rule of thumb in skill sequence is just this: whenever you can, upgrade your , and for every 2 ranks of , upgrade your . And of course, always upgrade your ult at 6, 11, and 16. I will explain later in the guide how to use these. The reason why I prefer over is because is what you need to land your , and it is used for escaping and creating ganks, so it is useful to have at any point in the game.

Farming

Farming with Veigar is easy, and extremely beneficial. The passive on his q allows him to gain 1/2/3/4/5 ap every time you last hit a minion with your Baleful Strike. On top of being great for your gold situation, it steadily builds up ap for late game. In late game, when getting Deathcap, you may find it useful just to skip the last hitting and just nuke the minions with your Dark Matter. Remember, this will be most effective once your Baleful Strike breaks 500 damage, so use it sparingly, or else the minions might sack your last hits >_<.

Laning

Usually people will give up mid for Veigar, simply because he's a great farmer and 1v1. If you absolutely have to go in a lane with a partner, try going with one of the following:(The name will have a rating 1-10 on how well they work together)
[*] Anivia(6)-Slows/Wall, also great burster
[*] Annie(7)-Stuns and great burst
[*] Ashe(7)-Serious slows, and a great counterpart to Veigar's AP
[*] Blitzcrank(9)-Blitz can set Veigar up extremely well. An uber-tank too
[*] Cho'Gath(7)-Knock ups and slows, plus a nice silence works well with Veigar
[*] Evelynn(7)-Stuns and burst. What more is there to say?
[*] Malphite(7)-Great tanky partner, and slows and knock up doesn't hurt too
[*] Miss Fortune(6)-AD counterpart and slows, kind of like Ashe but less so
[*] Nasus(5)-That one slow is basicly wat put Nasus on this list.
[*] Nunu(7)-Major slows, and a tanky helper
[*] Rammus(8)-Great tank, and taunts just beg somebody to come over and burst em down.
[*] Ryze(8)-Snare and burst work really well with Veigar
[*] Shen(8)-Taunt+tank+ninja. Figure it out yourself.
[*] Swain(7)-Snare is beautiful, and his dps is great for prepping the kill.
[*] Taric(8)-Stun and heal help Taric stay in a lane with Veigar constantly.
[*] Trundle(9)-Tanky helper, plus his slow is just amazing if you throw your e around it. There literally is no escape.

There are just a few people you NEVER want to lane agaisnt. They are Alistar, Garen, Karthus, Jarven, and Master Yi. Never leave yourself open to them. They just beg for a squishy.

Early Game

In the early game, it is key to farm/last hit with your Baleful Strike. It will help you out a ton, and will not only give you AP, but control over your lane. Remember, do not push, just last hit. This takes some practice and getting used to, but it will be worth it when you aren't getting gang-banged agaisnt a tower. The first thing you should buy always is Kage's Lucky Pick, as it gives you a nice gold bonus. By the end of the early game, you should have Sorc's, Kage's, and starting the other leg of Deathfire Grasp. When it comes to dealing with enemy champs, play passively, but don't starve yourself. Play a hit and run harrassment game with your . If you get damaged for 1 1/2 bars or more, use your . Do NOT, and I repeat, DO NOT, try to gank at early levels. It will just get you killed, unless you are fed and the enemy team is pushing like mad.

Mid Game

Mid game Veigar is where the magic start to happen (Get it? Because he's a mage!)
By mid game, you may start to venture outside your lane, but for the most part, focus down on your laning opponent(s). You may continue to farm your , if you really want to. This is when your combo comes into play. Your combo consists of 4 moves, and 5, if you have your ult up. First, initiate with Baleful Strike, just to get them to know you mean business. Throw out Deathfire Grasp or if they aren't expecting you, Dark Matter. Then throw down your Event Horizon. While they're stunned, nail em with Deathfire Grasp if you used your Dark Matter already, and if you already used Deathire Grasp, use your Dark Matter. At this point, you also want to nail em with your ultimate and Baleful Strike, because it should've recharged by now. If this didn't kill them (I have no idea why it wouldn't), keep spamming your , and if it is off CD, keep doing your combo. Basicly, it should look like this:

Late Game

Late game is where Veigar rises above everybody else. No matter how much health the enemy decides to stack on, Veigar blows through it easily. At some games, I've gotten my to do 700 damage, my ult to do 1.5k damage, and my Baleful Strike to do 500+. In team battles, Veigar's main purpose is to either A) Eliminate the tanks, B) Raise a ton of **** with Event Horizon, or C) Burst down carries. Veigar excells with all of these, just read the Mid Game section above about his combo. One little trick I love to do is protecting a turret with Event Horizon, or blocking a pathway in or out of a base. You wouldn't imagine what a turret can accomplish when their whole team is stunned right in front of it for 2.5 seconds. I'll talk about that more in the Skill Usage sections.

Skill Usage:Q

Active: Unleashes dark energy at target enemy dealing 80 / 125 / 170 / 215 / 260 (+60% of ability power) magic damage. If the target is killed, Veigar gains 1 ability power.

Passive: Veigar gains 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 ability power when he kills a champion from any source of damage.

This skill is simply amazing. It allows you to build up AP by farming, initiate, and bust AP based anything. Use it for a hit and run, or in your combo like mentioned above. It is your main tool in early game. Max it out first.

Skill Usage: W

After 1.2 seconds, dark matter falls from the sky to the target location, dealing 120 / 170 / 220 / 270 / 320 (+100% of ability power) magic damage.

This is fun to use, mainly because it does a buttload of damage. It has a great casting range, so use it if people don't see it, or you, coming. Also, it's a key part of your combo, as it does 600+ damage at end game. Not much to say about this one, just cast and watch die.

Skill Usage: E

Active: Veigar twists the edges of space around the target location for 3 seconds, stunning enemies who pass through the perimeter for 1.5 / 1.75 / 2 / 2.25 / 2.5 seconds.

Basicly your key skill for ganking, escaping, helping out a teamate, landing your combo, interrupting channeling, changing team fights, and part of the reason people don't feel comfortable attacking Veigar. In what I like to call 'the pic,' if I see an ally running, then throw an Event Horizon over them, just to save them from whoever was chasing them. This often leads to a burst, which either means a kill, or they will back off. Another good tactic is placing this in the jungle, which will cover up the whole passageway for 3 seconds, allowing a clean getaway. Do you think there is somebody just beyond the edge of those bushes? Event Horizon will reveal anybody inside its perimeter (since technically the spell was still cast there, which will eliminate any stealth/hiding). 4v1 defense? No problem. Throw your into the crowd and watch as they run in fear of being stunned and burst down from you and the turret. Event Horizon is one of your best utilities.

Showstopper: Using your Ultimate

Blasts an enemy champion, dealing 250 / 375 / 500 (+100% of ability power) plus his target's AP in magic damage.

When looking for a target for your ult, look at it this way:
1. Who has the most AP?
2. Are they low on health/away from a turret?
3. Who has the least MR? (Unless you have Void Staff, then you don't really have to worry about this).
Remember, in late game, this skill just spells instant death. In mid/late game it will easily take out 1/4 of their health, no matter how tanky. My favorite memories of this skill are when they are down to about 800 health, then BLAM ult, dead.

Just a couple notes here:
