It's a skill matchup imo. Top lane can go either way, though it's not an easy matchup for Riven. Irelia's sustain is difficult to deal with, but it's still winnable.
They both scale very well into late game. Irelia has more of a tanky bruiser role while Riven has a lot higher burst and more mobility. I don't think either champ has an advantage in team fights. Just the one with the best team, or if one of them won their lane.

I play Riven a lot so I find she has the easier time top. It can go either way up top but, I find that riven can get more agressive and long as she avoids the true damage from irelia, well irelia if she engages riven can just back off.
In a team fight they both got there purposes, I find irelia is more of a tank though well riven is more of an assassin (not full on but you get what im saying).
