for a complete list look for the tier lists throatleasher makes regularly in the blog section(i think he is featured blogger, so he should be easy to find).

Actually, Caitlyn just got nerfed. Not saying she's bad now, just not sure how strong she is / will be.
Personally, I would say you need something with an escape because a lot of low elo supports will not know how to teamfight properly (protecting you). Ezreal comes to mind, though there are definitely a lot of other options.
As far as mid is concerned, someone who is mobile and can roam well is useful to help in other lanes if they fall behind.
In the end what matters most is that you feel comfortable playing the champ and that you know how much damage they deal at certain stages of the game and with certain items, though ;)

Makes sense, ill try getting better at kassadin and Tristana.
@Mastrer Since Ryze has no escapes i'll leave him out for a bit :p

Ryze has the best escape in the game: the mighty PENTAKILL. the PENTAKILL removes all enemys from the game for a certain amount of time. this means they can't chase you anymore, so there you have your escape. you achieve the PENTAKILL by smashing your head on the keyboard multiple times while all 5 enemys are close to you.
