Mages probably beat AD carries in 1v1 all the time, so long as the caster has a stun. You could be 30/0 as an AD carry and have your full offense items, but even then if you get hit by Malzahar's bush combo (even if he's 0/0/0 but got a lot of minions), there's nothing the AD carry would be able to do. Of course if its Ryze who has no stun, wouldn't be a problem.
