I completely understand. The problem with the current method - and this is by no means whatsoever your fault - is that now, guide-making is becoming a competition among members. People will brutally down-vote other guides simply to raise their own higher, at least relative to these others. And you're right - ideally, the best guides do make it to the top. But the fact is, we have a lot of really good guides in the database that just aren't as high up as they deserve, usually because of trolls.
Trolling doesn't reflect an honest opinion of the community either, it reflects the "Oh, let's downvote this without reason so mine looks better" or the "Your items are weird and I didn't test this, but I'm gonna downvote anyway" or even the "I don't like you because you criticized my build, so here's a downvote to get vengeance" mindsets.
I understand that this is a very difficult problem to fix, and I want to thank you again for all the time and effort that you, along with many others, have put into this site.

This is very true.

I don't know if you guys agree with me, but I see my builds as my own way to play my champion.
Ye i try to mention a few times it's how i play the champion and my opinion.
aslong as their are ways of giving opinions/downvoting, it will happen and it happens everywhere.
The post count I think is quite a good trick to slow the trolling process, it would work to an extent, though people will want to stay anonymous, a list of the people to show who voted it up/down will be ...interesting to say the least >_>

I think that the fact that there's negative votes mentally puts a strain on some people because their guides are already very highly rated. For example:
Person 1 has a guide at 70% but gets dowvoted once, but while he was at 70% he got publicity on the front page of Mobafire, therefor he could compete
But back in the old day: Person 1 has +10 upvotes. Person 2 makes a build that starts at +0. He wouldn't ever get any publicity because the only build people would read is the one with 10 upvotes because well, bigger numbers = better, right?
Again, yes, the current mindset some people have when voting on builds or even commenting feels very hostile and vicious, it's an eternity long question that may never get fully answered but I feel the Admins are working as hard as they can (again, they make the site on their free time) to keep all the playing ground fair on the site.

Please don't leave. So what if you get downvoted? It doesn't change your build. There will always be trolls but more importantly there will be people who actually participate. Ignore the rating and just keep doing what you do. And I will add you are very good at it ;D

Check out my Renekton Guide (Under Construction)
I agree to the idea that for one to downvote one must be required to post the reason one thinks the build deserves so. 1: it will stop the trolls and 2: if the trolls post you can sort them out, either way the trolls have to post a reason why or expose themselves as being such.

They need to change the vote system thing like you can only vote if you have X post on forum AND you need a comment on that build to rate.
Otherwise everyone is getting downvoted without a reason, it even looks like bots.
But that sucks, I knew this site from a friend and everytime I want to try a new champion I come to mobafire check the "Green" guys with a build and test it, most of the times I just vote up because it's basically a "how to" to a new champ and it's very useful for the comunity.
Too bad that's not the 1st guy archiving the builds just because the stupid kids.
:(

Thing with that is we may get even more text spam in order to meet a certain requirement to simply vote.
Oh 20 posts? You can vote everything up or down now yay!

You need to log in before commenting.
Trolls will be Trolls. I like Dante rebellion's Idea of taking out the downvote completely. Then the builds can be judged by how many likes it has or something.
Just wanted to clarify a few things, for those that are newer to the site.
Pokimoki, that was basically our original system. It merely summed your votes together, resulting in a score that would continue to inflate over time, until it was absolutely impossible to supplant the top guides from their spot.
In order to fairly rank guides next to each other regardless of their age we changed this to a normalized score - we converted it into a percentage based on + vs - votes. Then came the problem that new guides would get 1 vote and suddenly have 100% score. The total number of votes was an important factor that was left out.
To resolve that we applied a weighted system that is used by many popular sites including IMDB to rank similar content together - a bayesian estimate. This weights your score up or down based on the total number of votes you have, according to a balanced formula. The more votes you have, the less heavily your final score will be weighted.
Thus was the evolution of our current scores :) The down sides to the current score itself are that all guides start out at roughly 50% and it is then a tough climb up. It is actually impossible to achieve a score of 100%, your score can simply approach but not reach it. However, everyone is in the same boat, so while it makes your score appear low... It does the same to everyone.
The weights also help to counteract trolling. A troll vote could be considered as one that goes against the popular opinion. These will have a lesser effect on the final score due to the weights. Any vote, even a down vote, decreases the weight applied to your score.
The formula applies a "confidence" level to the scores. More votes means we are more confident in what your true score should be. This is why we need MORE votes, and why the features and steps we have taken in the past have focused on trying to drive MORE votes to the most valuable guides. It is also why we have avoided features that have the potential to decreases the total number of votes being cast.
Jebus McAzn, a way to let the general community consensus decide what builds get featured, is to have an open voting system where anyone can cast their opinion without fear of censorship or retaliation :)
