Garen is fine imo, he can easily get countered and made useless. But against foolish players that make mistakes ( like no wards and map awareness in general ) he can punish them easily. Tank garen can't die easily (well, like most tanks :P ) but imo he doesn't qualify as one due to lack of CC. Dps / offtank Garen is the way for me, in which case you must deny him early game. Seems balanced to me, typical don't-stand-near-me champion.

Garen is completely first ban, first pick atm, and I make a point of it to ban him every time I get the chance alongside Orianna.
Garen is just broken OP lately and I found the only way to counter him effectively is to put someone with ranged harass up against him, though most people are too hung up with the "meta" to change the format.

I'm happy about this because Garen was my next planned champion, then on to some delicious armor runes.
