I had to stand between two students today to break off their fight. They were swearing at each other and slapping each other in the face. They were reaching around me and kicking around my legs. It lasted for almost the entire period, broken up by brief breaks where they'd sit down and just cuss each other with foul language. One was about twice the weight of the other, and just used it to his advantage. The smaller one never backed down.
It was frikken scary and they did hurt me by trying to bypass my arms and legs and it shocked me.

I used to get into a lot of fights as a kid and ended up hurting the staff now and then. Karate helped me solve my anger issues tho, so you might suggest some sports/activityto the parents of these kids :P
Either way you did what you were supposed to do, which isn't always easy ;)
Thank you Byron for 2014's loudest laugh up till today

Parents of those kids are the reason why they're fighting. Lots of clan issues. Another teacher told me I should have let them take it outside. Was informed that the bigger boy had full-on punched another female teacher last year. I'm not a violent person and I've only ever been hit by my sister and parents, so any form of pain for me is a huge shock to my system.
Definitely wasn't easy! They're only kids, but yeah, still scary :P

If calling someone in the school didn't improve the situation, they'd just call the police and the police would deal with it.
At my high school if you got into a fight like this you were pretty much out. Never seen one happen. In elementary school however there were a few that I witnessed.

It was never a teacher's job to deal with a fight other than to keep it from getting worse until someone who was trained to deal with such things could get there.

We don't have security guards in Australia at all afaik
And I went to some pretty prestigious schools so I would know

Basically MOBAFire.

^That sounds frustrating. I guess the system exists to stop people coming to the country without the means/intention to support them, which is fair enough. Do any of Nick's qualifications count towards making him a more desirable immigrant? Or does the form not really count for that and only analyses your income? I hope it all goes well for you two with that road-bump

Prior to working at my new school, I rarely saw fights at all. At this school fighting is called "gamin fighting" which is meant to be play fighting. But it really isn't. There is anger behind the slaps and taps. I saw a kid pick up another kid and grind the back of his head into some shelves. The kid getting beat was laughing and joking around, but I could tell he was in pain. It was just dead awful. As a teacher we have duty of care, but another teacher was telling me if I got critically injured, I'd just be another statistic. It's scary.
Amanda - I assume you've already considered all options, but could one of you get a working visa instead and work in the country for some time to demonstrate willingness to not be a burden?
