There are people who have made it to 1900 elo with Twitch using revive smite. The game has at least enough balance that some players find a way to make even the worst champions function from time to time. However, it doesn't have enough balance yet that a champion like Morde can be a great pick. He's not a great pick. He would be average at best against any competent player. I'm giving him the chance to support his claims that Morde is strong. I don't think that Morde is strong and I suspect that had we gamed I would have laid a messy shit on Morde's chest. Although since I'm not certain of it, and haven't played against one since the rework, I myself would be curious enough to see just how well the Morde player managed. Where's the contradiction?
