Well this is HIGHLY situational. We would have to know what do you play, and against what. Since a single Xin can change the tactics you should use.
There isnt any universal thing. You should always try to keep distance from the whole fight but be close enaugh to hit your target (preferably not tank that is right in your face) but the worst you can do is to get close enaugh for a charge champion to get to you. You can always try to kite and lure enemies and shot as they back up coz they overextend.
Too many "if"s here to give a straight answer

Trist is somehow specific. You either jump in and know your target inside your party and than you run away kiting ppl and than when they overextend you attack back or you save the jump and ulti as an escape mechanisms so you dps dps dps and when som1 gets too close you jump away or shoot his *** away.
Corki is easier. since you rarely use the valk as an offensive tool.

My personal preference is to try to stay on the out-skirts for the first <5 seconds until their ad/ap carry moves in and then find a way to get to them. While you are on the outskirts you will be attacking with moves such as Ashe's Volley or Caitlyn's Peacemaker. Enough to make them try to come after you so that they are distracted from the rest of the team, but far enough away that you aren't Irelia-feed.
I know your problem. When I started playing as Vayne, I was dying fast during battles. Training is the best way to know where you should be.
#1: Know your champion. I learned that going face to face and kill an enemy is impossible as Vayne, you have to surprise attack the enemy.
#2: Stay behind and wait till the enemies start hitting someone. Ranged carries die too easily. Stay away of battle for some secs and then go.
The best way to practice this is inviting some friends and play custom games.

also if you find yourself out of position, don't hesitate to use your summoner spells. Using flash to get on the outskirts of a fight where you're safe from damage but still poking like crazy is pretty awesome. Same deal with ghost, but less instantaneous *durr*
If you play Trist and Corki, if a team fight breaks out, you should almost ALWAYS use your escape spells (Rocket Jump/Valkyrie) for defensive positioning only. Jump over walls for maximum effect. Never initiate with your W on a team because then you'll be forced to pop a summoner's to get out, if you're able to at all.

edit: ranged carry. ;)
